Re: Hurban finally arrives in S.A.

I'm almost positive clear channel wasn't going Hurban with any of their SA stations. Mix has climbed up to a 3.6 share. Z definatly lost their chance but could still go Hip Hop if they wanted to. they're so slow to change, though.
La Kalle is sounding good except there's obviously some cut offs and sharp stops between the sweepers and the songs. Could use some seque work and possibly more channels on the board/computer software.

Hurbian will fall by the wayside over the next few years, its way too narrowcast'd as a format and wont work in most of the US.

Aren't most radio stations "narrowcast'd"? Don't most stations
have a defined focus? If so, then you can say that country
is "narrowcast'd" and you certainly don't find them in all
u.s. markets. Hurban won't work in Duluth Minnesota just like
country won't work in certain markets.

Re: Hurban finally arrives in S.A.

I think KZZA out of Dallas was smart to mix in Hip Hop with the reggaeton. It sounds good together and it expands the playlist (and the audience). I've already heard many songs repeated within the same hour on La Kalle (but of course 95.1 doesn't want to subtract listeners from their sister station, The Beat, so they can't play hip hop).
All in all, it's a good change from Amor.

Perhaps the success of CC's Mega 101 in Houston prompted Univision not to be beaten to the punch in SA. There have been La Kalle formats launced recently in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

David Eduardo, any comments you'd like to add here?

Las vegas is La Kalle, and Univsion. LA is Latino, and SBS. There are also Kalle stations in NY, Chicago, Houston, Fresno, San Jose, San Francisco. All of the La Kalles stations are Univision.

This sounds like what was said of, first, rap, and then hip hop.

Reggaetón works everywhere in Latin America, from Chile to Puerto Rico to Mexico. It is working everywhere in the US, with strong results where it is done correctly. Reggaetón is toda's Spanish pop music.

*whats kinda dumb though is down here in San Antonio the city is so big and we cater to so many different races that music comes in fades, yea this reggaeton is big right now but will it be at this time next year, I think the station is pretty good but I cant see it on the air for years or better yet a year to come, plus its a univision radio station and univision is knowned for playing the same stuff over and over and they have commercial after commercial, right now they just have radio drops but thats the way the beat started off with drops then they had djs then morning shows so we just have to way around and see whats going to happen with this new station..

good question. let's look at some of the trends.
there are many new labels being developed that will
record and develop reggaeton, latin hip hop, r&b,
etc. and they include:

Bad Boy Latino - P. Diddy and Pitbull have joined
forces to develop and sign reggaeton and latin urban acts.

Roc La Familia - A new imprint of Def Jam recordings
also dedicated to the genre. Principal players:
Jay Z & Russel Simmons.

All latin labels have started latin urban imprints:
Warner(Mic Discos)
EMI(New Element)
Universal(Machete Discos)
some of these labels have already bought a huge portion
of catalog artists from puerto rico.

Atlantic Records will soon release Tego Calderon's full-
length disc. Plus, they signed a multi-year partnership
with his label Jiggirri Records which will develop talent
for Atlantic. Billboard launches latin rythmic charts.
Five of the top ten latin albums in the country are
reggaeton acts. The industry is growing and Hurban is
supporting it. It can't be stopped. Resistance is futile.

I don't recall of a station called "La Kalle" in Houston. Does this mean that KOVE (or another univision station in Houston)is Changing formats?

I think he's referring to Kalle-style stations. Houston has one of those in Clear Channel's Mega 101.
