NEW SHOW HOST ON WWBA

For about 6 or so weeks, News-Talk 820 AM (Genesis) in Tampa, has been pushing another topic and information spinner called, "Shawna Vercher." I've heard her interviewed several times by "Big Show" host Mike Reeves, and listened to her paid advertised show on Saturdays a few times. While her resume includes a Bush, and now an Obama, my question is; where's the beef? Recently, her sound-bites (or bytes) are being rolled over and over again and again regarding her coincidental on-air receipt of information regarding the shooting tragedy in Arizona by some kook. "Reports are coming from all over the nation," "[after an ABC news release]...Thanks [so-n-so] for the report..[as if speaking directly to the ABC reporter, but wasn't].," "[caller] You're doing a great job..." Is she really? Most listeners on/in the news-talk format do not want vapid inconsistent, shallow interpretation of facts. Those types listen almost strictly to Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Smerconish, Bill Bennett or even to some extent Alex Jones. (Does she really think we need to take better care of the homeless because "homeless" is mentioned in/on a 19th century poem affixed to the Statue of Liberty? There wasn't any U.S. government programs for welfare at the turn of the 19th century, nor does the poem imply "taking care of homeless" because the government "promised" to do it.)
The Monday following the shooting in Arizona, she, and also the "Big Show" host attempted to smear Anti-Big Government activist and Republican cheerleaders for the cause for the shootings. Seriously? Are we really a "democracy" Ms. Vercher, or a Constitutional Republic?
Is the WWBA morning producer attempting to broadcast just the facts, or inject his less than forthright omissions of fact? Or, are the executives at WWBA attempting to get out in-front of a potential re-implementation of the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" as proposed by the FCC? Opinions of facts are acceptable by the listeners, but selective omission of facts in the opinion is an insult. Many in the Tampa Bay area listen to the "Big 3" when it comes to the AM frequencies. However, some really do believe in a, "small, family owned independent" station. The latter is what attracted at least me to WWBA, but it is sadly becoming another "Big Corporation" type attitude and mindset. Cut overhead, cut the fat, cut the mediocre "talent," but don't cut the beef. Captain Matt in the mornings anyone?

She's a dysfunctional lefty - why on Earth are you listening to WWBA these days anyway?? It's no longer a "real station". Just brokered radio trying to look like legitimate talk/opinion/news.

Mark,

I think DtotheJ meant as in WWBA-D, or WWBAD as this station has turned out to be a disappointment to a lot of folks.

Pretty sure MT understood ... And WWBA isn't really a talk news station. It's like an advertising magazine in radio form.

JerkyBoy33707....... you hit the nail on the head......... you have a way with words!

That being said, what words or phrase would you use to describe WTIS 1100?

curious in st. pete (but not zip 33707)

drt

drt, WTIS 1100 is a station I know nothing about. SORRY !

no thread

The Shawna Vercher promo was based on the fact that WWBA was the only station with live, general-interest talk radio when the Tucson shootings happened. Thus they were able to get on the air and talk about it while other stations were in infomercials and specialty shows. Funny thing is, their coverage got cut off after an hour or so when WWBA's OWN infomercials kicked in!

There are aspects of Vercher's show that have potential. Unfortunately, nobody ever told her that you don't energize a talk show by asking questions for the public to answer. You energize it by putting out strong opinions and letting the public bounce off them. Mike Reeves needs that memo too. People here keep trying to peg him as the "liberal" but in truth his ideas are clueless and ill-formed. He simply agrees with whatever his last caller said.

I'm amazed at how the ideological police are demanding that WWBA be all-Tea-party-red meat, all-the-time but refused to support it when it was that way, thus forcing their hand economically. Just chill out and celebrate your "victory" in getting Michelle Patty off the station.

I can't handle Vercher for more than five minutes. She sounds like a valley girl to me.

Valley-girl-speak is pretty much standard American English for those under 40. Remember that Moon Unit Zappa, whose peers at the Galleria inspired the song and the term, is now about that age herself.

Apparently, neither do most of us. Last time I heard, they ran the same imaging using the same equipment since the 1970s.

Did he mean WTIS 1110 (not 1100)?
Yes, that should have been WTIS 1110 (Tampa's Inspirational/infomercial Station)......... daytime only, licensed to Tampa with towers just north of Derby Lane in St. Pete. (CP to change COL to St. Pete and tower location to Tampa expired several months ago).

WTIS is a dollar-a-holler station. If you got the money, your religious broadcast goes on the air. I was there doing the "Joyful Noise" era when we had Norm Swenson and Sue Alexander as announcers and we did live remotes and sold spots. It's a miracle WTIS plods along decade after decade.
