For about 6 or so weeks, News-Talk 820 AM (Genesis) in Tampa, has been pushing another topic and information spinner called, "Shawna Vercher." I've heard her interviewed several times by "Big Show" host Mike Reeves, and listened to her paid advertised show on Saturdays a few times. While her resume includes a Bush, and now an Obama, my question is; where's the beef? Recently, her sound-bites (or bytes) are being rolled over and over again and again regarding her coincidental on-air receipt of information regarding the shooting tragedy in Arizona by some kook. "Reports are coming from all over the nation," "[after an ABC news release]...Thanks [so-n-so] for the report..[as if speaking directly to the ABC reporter, but wasn't].," "[caller] You're doing a great job..." Is she really? Most listeners on/in the news-talk format do not want vapid inconsistent, shallow interpretation of facts. Those types listen almost strictly to Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Smerconish, Bill Bennett or even to some extent Alex Jones. (Does she really think we need to take better care of the homeless because "homeless" is mentioned in/on a 19th century poem affixed to the Statue of Liberty? There wasn't any U.S. government programs for welfare at the turn of the 19th century, nor does the poem imply "taking care of homeless" because the government "promised" to do it.)
The Monday following the shooting in Arizona, she, and also the "Big Show" host attempted to smear Anti-Big Government activist and Republican cheerleaders for the cause for the shootings. Seriously? Are we really a "democracy" Ms. Vercher, or a Constitutional Republic?
Is the WWBA morning producer attempting to broadcast just the facts, or inject his less than forthright omissions of fact? Or, are the executives at WWBA attempting to get out in-front of a potential re-implementation of the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" as proposed by the FCC? Opinions of facts are acceptable by the listeners, but selective omission of facts in the opinion is an insult. Many in the Tampa Bay area listen to the "Big 3" when it comes to the AM frequencies. However, some really do believe in a, "small, family owned independent" station. The latter is what attracted at least me to WWBA, but it is sadly becoming another "Big Corporation" type attitude and mindset. Cut overhead, cut the fat, cut the mediocre "talent," but don't cut the beef. Captain Matt in the mornings anyone?
