New Shows at MSNBC

Apparently some new shows at MSNBC haven't connected with audiences. Specifically the nightly Jen Psaki show appears to be weak:

My take on this is Jen is an "inside the beltway" wonk. So are most of the hosts they currently have. That's a pretty limited audience.

She does a funny mock "press briefing" at the end, where she uses real questions from today's WH press briefing, and puts her own spin on them.

Wonky has worked for Chris Hayes, but it doesn't seem to work for Jen. The time would be ripe for an Ed Schultz-type of liberal who can connect with the average American. Jen doesn't do that.

There are rumors that Ari Melber is considering leaving MSNBC. Yes this is all while MSNBC’s parent company is waiting for the approval of the Versant spinoff.

Of course, one must consider the source. Fox News will always put a negative spin on any story that involves MSNBC. (In fact, it's extremely rare for them to run a MSNBC-focused story if they can't find a negative aspect to seize upon.)

The Olbermann vs. O'Reilly feud continues, years after they both left their respective networks.

What was wrong with Alex Wagner, who held down Tues-Fri 9-10 (EST/EDT) after Rachel Maddow went to a Monday-only program (plus special events & coverage)? Alex struck me as presenting a very respectable show. Less wonky, more sense-of-humor, while still covering the news of the day.

I just don't know if anyone can fill Rachel's shoes. And having Rachel on one night a week, in the same time slot, made it all the more difficult.

As I said, Alex Wagner had been doing a decent job of it. She's also fundamentally a journalist, one who's by now had a lot of television experience. Jen Psaki would do well in another, earlier-in-the-evening time slot. The idea that they needed to transplant a whole team from the weekends into the 7pm slot is where the problem is. Things need to be much more entertaining, much less polemical, if they want to return to some level of success.
