New signal for Digital 104.1. Better coverage???

New signal should be up and running by Mid-July. Currently, 104.1 is broadcasting from a transmitter on the southside of S.A. The new transmitter is roughly 1500 ft. in height with the wattage of 36,000. Before, the height was around 1000 ft and at 100,000 watts.

I gues that explains why there in mono broadcasting, maybe getting ready to switch to the new tower.

I'm looking at the predicted coverage on radio-locator and it seems that it's going to cover pretty much the same area. If they kept the 100,000 watts with the new tower they'd be in much better shape.

Will the KRIO-FM1 15KW booster come online at the same time? IIRC this booster is actually inside of Bexar County and should solidify penetration on the southside of SA. This is a well thought out piece of engineering. Other rimshots like 92.5, 95.7 or even the new 103.1 should consider something similar. 89.9 should try something like this and give up the translator at 93.3.

I'm sure they would have liked to keep the 100,000 watts with the new, higher tower. However, the law won't allow it. KRIO-FM is a class C1 station. Once a C1 gets above a certain height, it has to start reducing power. The new signal won't change things much, at least on paper, because it's still the same technical equivalent of 100,000 watts at the old height, which was close to the maximum height a class C1 could run and remain at 100,000 watts.

Yeah, I don't see 104.1 doing too much better in the San Antonio area. COverage is marginal at BEST in all but the southern most areas of San Antonio. Once in a great while, KRIO will actually come in at my place in Northwest Austin...but that is normally when KRBE is having a "bad day".

Out at my place in Lavaca county I get bad multi paths through both stations in my truck, but with my new outside antenna about 20' up down there (for my home a/v system) pointed towards Missouri City durring the summer skip months i'll hear KRIO station in with KRBE. Here near Austin though I can get it most anytime with my antenna to San antonio, I can even get KRPT over KKLB most of the time. Only problem with that antenna since it is a directional it has a problem with the weaker stations here like KXBT and KXXS and KINV. But most of the rest of the radiostations in Austin it can recieve just as clear as can get.
