New simulcast in Indy

WFDM plans to simulcast their 95.9 southern Indy metro signal on WXLW 950am. That should give them much greater metro coverage, in the day time anyway.

Makes more sense than trying to be Indy's 3rd sports station. They have some good syndicated shows.

But this will leave ESPN Radio without clearance of most of their lineup in Indy. My bet is that someone else becomes the third sports talker by the end of the year.

Shame Emmis Doesnt have a 2nd AM or a 4th FM in Market or Hank wasnt doing do so good at going at WFMS. or i could see Emmis putting the Fan on FM with more of a local line up. and go back to ESPN on 1070. but they dont have the FM or the 2nd am.

If Emmis had that 2nd available Station. i could see them doing like the WBNS Stations did in Columbus when the moved the local Line up to the FM and went all ESPN on the AM. but with the Fact Hank is doing to Good, B105.7 is the bread winner of the AC Stations. and no chance in hell of WIBC Being bounced a 2nd time. the only way the 10a to 7pm ESPN Line up to get cleared right now be on 97.1 HD2 would be my guess

And it will still help at night. The night signal reaches most of the area inside 465...including downtown where 95.9 gets slaughtered by 96.3. Anyone remember when 95.9 was playing rap before 96.3 existed and had better than a 5 share in the ratings? I want to say they called it Pizzaz 96 or some such. Must have been prior to August 1991 when the WHHH call letters were assigned.

Was Pizaz all rap? 810 AM also ventured into rap as Yo 8-1-0. HHH was only playing a few rap hits mixed in with rhythmic pop, dance etc. when they started.

The calls were WPZZ Pizazz sounds right IIRC.

They kept the WPZZ calls when they were black gospel under Bishop Willis. Place has been through a number of call signs / formats since it was WIFN in the 70's. They've been Freedom 95.9 for a while...probably a modern day record with the same format.

yeah they been freedom 95.9 Since WWFT flipped to AC then to CHR to Hot AC. as Warm 93.9 an I94.

95.9 has lasted in its current format since 11/2007 while
93.1 went from Top 40 to News Talk
1070 from News Talk to Sports Talk
93.9 in the adformentioned From News Talk, to AC, to CHR to Hot AC
100.9 from Smooth Jazz to Top 40
101.9 from Oldies to Christian
107.9 in the same format has changed from the Track to My
and 950 has its primary sports talk national network also change its name from Sporting News Radio to Yahoo Sports Radio and also lost ESPN Radio only to regain the midday/APD part of ESPN Radio a year later LOL

I have been scratching my head for years as to WHY this didn't occur well-before now. It seems like a natural compliment. 95.9 [today] suffers from an emasculated signal north of I-70 – and there is very-little that is useable on a typical FM receiver downtown within the shadow of the Bank One tower [where WHHH lives].
A lot has changed on the FM band as stations shuffle for upgrades, but I can remember a time when the 3kw signal of WIFN Franklin was a standout. I could easily receive it in Connersville in the 1970s despite WQLK Richmond on adjacent 96.1. I'll never forget it clobbering co-channel WKUZ Wabash in Marion! Fast-forward a couple decades, and WKUZ was mixing with the Franklin signal at 96th and I-69! WHAT happened to that signal? ???
btw, the already-exceptional audio on 1580 WIFE Connersville seems to have "clicked-up" a notch... 'An Omnia EPROM update, maybe? That 250-watt "pocket rocket" is sounding better than ever! GOOD job, BobOnTheJob!!!

The AM band seems to be loaded with hash nowdays. Even strong out of town signals like 700 or 890 can often be difficult to hear clearly.

Had Pete Boyce up and we did some WIFE antenna tuning a few weeks ago but have not touched the Omnia Hippo...why mess with perfection? :) .

I've wondered the same thing about 95.9. I've worked there twice (in the early-mid 90's and for the past couple years) and during my absence, the antenna was changed and the transmitter replaced. The old transmitter was a 1960's Gates and an ancient 3 bay full wave antenna. Now a Harris 5KW Solid State and a 2 bay half wave spaced antenna aimed the right way. They did it just like I would have but I also have heard WKUZ mixing with it just after getting onto I-69. All I can figure is that WKUZ upgraded as well..of course, 95.9 is locked into the power they have...there will be no 6KW for them :( . That makes the simulcast all the more obvious. When I started there for my second tour of duty, I suggested this simulcast idea, never expecting it to go anywhere. And I'm sure that "idea" didn't suddenly go from zero to reality just based on my several minute rant. But if that idea where already percolating, then maybe my 2 cents worth nudged it along? In any case, it's election season and getting Laura, Hannity and others more prominently on display in the city limits of Indy can only be a good thing IMHO...OK, maybe sometimes my opinion is not so humble.

One thing worthy of note is that the WXLW pattern (as noted previously on this board) has been loosened up and the signal now carries to Kokomo and Muncie...areas where it was a no show in the past. Of course, that also helps it out in Carmel and other money burbs.

It won't be long now!

I don't follow you Bob. Are they still operating on their existing license (5KW D 120 Watts N DA2); the CP for 5KW D, 40 watts nights DA2 (essentially the same pattern with some changes in field ratio and phasing but not enough to have the kind of effect you mention with the reduced power); or the APP for 1250 watts days, 30 watts nights omni?
According to the Cavell Mertz plots, the current (today and 2 years ago) and future (CP) patterns have remained relatively unchanged.
Of course, I always operate in a state of confusion with a high level of erroneous thinking, so please tell me what's up.

It is a confusing mess and if I didn't have my RF burned fingers in the pie, I'd be right there with ya. The 1250W/30W app was an STA so they could measure the signal that goes north (where the protected stations live). That was used for a brief time maybe a year ago? Then came the number crunching along with some PM on the site and finally, the readjustment of the directional parameters that moved the 2mv signal several miles to the north--and there are a lot of people in that relatively small area. It doesn't look like a lot on the map, but that slight increase close in had impacts that reach many miles to the north while reducing the southerly reach by a slight amount. It was a good tradeoff from my observations.

Thanks... It actually makes sense and i get it.
You're the man!

Most of ESPN Radio's programming airs on 1070 The Fan www.1070thefan.com/ as far as i know during the day they air ESPN Radio's daytime programming until 3 P.M EST

hope this helps

According to the site, the ONLY ESPN show they air is Mike and Mike. The rest is local talk. XL 950 airs the rest of the daytime lineup.
