New songs REAL alternative stations are and should be playing

I've made a collection of a few songs that have gained some airplay and sales in the indie/alternative market, no, I'm not talking Seether or Puddle of Mudd crap, this stuff is REAL alternative and if your station has any kind of real cred, they are playing these songs. I know for a fact stations like WFNX in Boston, WBRU in Providence, Indie 103.1 in LA, and 94.9 the Sound in Cincy to name a few are all playing these songs.

Vampire Weekend - A-Punk (HUGE!!)
MGMT - Time to Pretend
The Ting Tings - Great DJ
Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart
Flobots - Handlebars
Nine Inch Nails - Discipline
Carolina Liar - I'm Not Over
The Kooks - Always Where I Need to Be
Spoon - Don't You Evah
The Black Keys - Strange Times
Flogging Molly - Requeim For a Dying Song
Band of Horses - No One's Gonna Love You

I never see this station get mentioned very often, but check out 102.7 WEQX from Manchester, VT (they serve part of the Albany, NY market). Lots of independent artists get played on that station. And don't forget about WWCD in Columbus, OH. And the Entercom-owned alternative stations out west (KNDD, KWOD, KNRK) are all sounding good these days as well, although Arbitron thinks otherwise.

I think the Kooks are terrible! I saw them on MTV2 last night. What a contrived, manufactured, bunch of Strokes rip offs!

Agreed but remember, if your playlist is too blog/indie centric, your ratings will suffer. People like new music but if you are TOO far left of the dial, expect to have a small niche audience.

Also, most of these "indie" bands are as homogenous and disposable as most of the regressive (thanks SoulCrusher) rock bands. Only worthwhile ones in that list with any longevity are Spoon, NIN, Flogging Molly and Death Cab.

The rest of their songs may be disposable... but that Flobots song... best instant response in my three years at my station. Absolutely amazing.

Disposable!? I urge you to grab MGMT's record "Oracular Spectacular", give it a listen and tell me if any other "modern rock" release out this year sounds remotely like it. I think you'd find that there was very little, if no resemblance. One of the most original releases in years.

As far as the Flobots go, it's just one of those songs that come around once every couple of years and just resonates through everybody: you hear it everywhere, everyone either LOVES it or HATES it, no grey area. Reminds me of when Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" was out in 1997. LOL

i hated handlebars when i 1st heard it but it grows on u.

I've had the MGMT record ever since last year. It's really good. However, it's another hipster/blog/hype band that has no real staying power. Added up with a completely uninspired live performance, people will get tired real quick. Maybe they'll be another crossover hit but otherwise, this band will revert back to the underground.

You don't deserve to program a alternative radio station if you compare the Flobots to "Chumbawamba." The band speaks for a good percentage of the people under the age of 35 in this country. Pick up the CD, listen to it, and enjoy the original lyric/sound of this band.

Glad I have your vote of confidence (sarcasm). But if you'd READ my post you'd know that I wasn't comparing the STYLES of the songs, I was comparing the WAY THE SONG WAS RECEIVED. Yes they are on opposite ends of the musical spectrum, I have ears. Yes, the kids love Flobots. It's catchy and works. But the love it or hate it relationship the audience have with the Flobots song is indeed the same reception that "Tubthumping" got back in 1997.

The Kids? Are you kidding me? 90 percent of the requests are from adults of all ages. Open your eyes...just because it is new and catchy doesn't mean that only kids will like it.

These songs that were mentioned are all being played on more eclectic alternative stations like WEQX, WFNX, and WWCD, which aren't exactly "Indie" stations. I'll had a few more recent tracks to the list:

Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma
Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance
Spoon - You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb
Ting Tings - Shut Up And Let Me Go
My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges or Touch Me I'm Going To Scream

I guess that's your opinion of bands that actually show some creativity. Go listen to your low IQ trucker rock acts like Nickelback, Daughtry, Hinder, Buckcherry and Kid Rock - the reason why stations that play acts like these are popular is because of all the morons that enjoy safe, dumb pop/rock acts that are rehashing sounds that are 20-30 years old.

And if you ever run into the members of the aforementioned bands - tell them to get back to their caves, because their rocks need fixing.

It's the economically frustrated and intellectually challenged who cling to their guns, religion and active rock stations! ;D

I'd like to see where you get those numbers. My guess is you pulled them outta your @#$. Prove me wrong. Then go listen to Nickelback.
