New Sports Station Coming To DFW

I know of one. I switched from Beautiful Music WSRA to all-salsa WZNT at 6 PM on a Friday afternoon. We went silent for an hour, and then launched the new format.

Another: At Emmis, we launched Mega 98.3 on a Friday around 11 AM.

Neither did any stunting. Both were #1 in their first month.

People like that do not exist any more. Radio's don't have mechanical dials where a listener may "tune" up and down the dial looking for something. They have presets and only look elsewhere due to outside promotion or word of mouth.
Okay David "Mr. Radio Pro" Eduardo. I don't even know why we post anything. You got all the "facts" and "answers" my brother...

100.3 Jamz KJMZ flipped to V-100 on 9-1-1995, which was a Friday afternoon. I remember it well. Jamz played “End of the Road” by Boyz II Men and then faded out. There was some construction noises then the new Voice of the station announced “The All New V-100”. I heard Tom Joyner’s voice and the Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On”. Such a glorious day. The music was awesome. It’s was great station until October 1996.

You can post whatever you like that is within the board rules. But those of us who disagree can post our opinions.

Again, it has been about 3 decades or so since we got digital car radios and people stopped manually tuning radios that stunting has ceased to be effective.

When the only stations in a market were all on AM and at most there were 8 to 10 good signals, stunting got noticed. Since FM became dominant and those markets had 30 or more viable signals, nobody tunes up and down the dial. They set for the favorite stations.

Obvious question: have you ever managed or programmed a radio station?

So um, does anyone in the market have any opinions on if P1's will resent Rhyner for doing this?
The real issue, from the strange name to all this chatter, is whether this is a remake of the old stunting practice, but intended to generate "sports bar" chatter and build up to something we are not accurately predicting... or are overthinking.

In any case, "sports bar" talk is about the only kind of street level word-of-mouth that might be effective today.

At this point, I don't think stunting really matters. With the internet, everyone already knows. I was thinking about that yesterday while driving. Who will hear this and actually be surprised? Sure, there will be some, but for the most part, the secret is out, even with a lot of the details about the personalities. If you're making a move, and think it's THAT BIG, of course why wouldn't you go ahead and unleash the details?

Radio is a shell of its former self. I do agree with a few of your earlier posts about Sports being able to withstand the storm of podcasting, etc. The question is, will it be buried between the other 2 sports stations, whether or not P1's really care still about Rhyner, and if they will revolt against him for abandoning the Ticket. Now, THAT said, the Ticket has had staff fluctuations in the past 9 months, BUT the ratings haven't reflected that as being an issue - in fact they've gone up.

There really is a lot to unpack here with what's happening. For us old School radio people, it's really fun to watch though.

I think stunting matters if they’re planning on blowing up the Eagle on a Friday- they’re not going to unveil and launch a new weekday lineup on the last day of the workweek. Maybe a farewell/introduction of the new staff, followed by a weekend of Freak stunting and a full launch Monday? That’s seems more interesting than launching with a weekend of whatever sports network filler they’re going to use in off-hours.

yeah. i get the feeling the Stunting begins at 5 PM today (now that it's almost 2 AM here) and the flip occurs at 6 AM Monday

or they will repeat the way 105.3 flipped from Young Country to 105.3 The Talk That Rocks Texas, by just straight up avoid the stunt, play a song with a farewell meaning (which the last song on 105.3 as Young Country was The Dance by Garth Brooks ) and then go straight to the first show on the new station format (which 105.3 did with Russ Martin coming on the air welcoming listeners to the new station and played the "alright ya hayseeds, it's a stick up" line from the bank robbery scene from Raising Arizona famously said by John Goodman).

The audio from when the 105.3 flip in 2000 happened:

Host Debbie Sexxton just announced that tomorrow is October 1, which marks the beginning of Rocktober. Well, it won't be much of a Rocktober on 97.1.

There’s a certain symbolism in that. It feels so on the nose that I wonder if this is intentional. “Rock is dead” after all and what better time to kill a rock station than the start of “Rocktober”.
