New Sports Station Coming To DFW

Alt 103.7 just played Metallica “Enter Sandman”
Sounds like Allers is already testing the waters for making 103.7 a “Rock Alternative”. KVIL’s parallel journey is going to be incredibly interesting if not as high profile as KEGL’s “The Freak” transformation.

Still no PD named as of yet:

According to the schedule, The Ben and Skin Show's new time is from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, with one more hour than they had before the format change.

So during Mavericks broadcasts will the outcue be "on the Freak/Mavericks Radio Network" or will they just go back to "Dallas Mavericks Radio Network"

I'm in New York City, and I haven't heard any commercials that are targeted to my area whenever I've listened to KEGL.
Very possibly they have not included it yet in their streaming package, but still have to keep the majority of agency spots that use SAG-AFTRA talent off the stream.

I like the move, at least conceptually. Similar stations perform very well in Tampa and Orlando. Very happy to see a personality oriented station built around LOCAL air talent in all key dayparts!
I wouldn’t mind seeing hot talk replace the traditional old news talkers on FM. If there were more national material to pull from, I think we’d see it more than we do. FL loves it for some reason. I wouldn’t mind seeing traditional 55+ news/talkers blown up for this type of talk format. Better demos but way more expensive since there’s not a lot of established shows for national airplay.

Lets bring some common sense into this issue. Those who are fans of the former Ticket personalities will sample the radio station. I will admit that if I am in my vehicle when spots air on 96.7, I will flip over to 97.1 for a second. But if its not entertaining then I am gone. 97.1 make take some listeners from 96.7/1310, but end then its boils down to will 97.1 be entertaining or not. We will see.

If I had a station like that near me, I'd at least give it a try. If you'd have told me 20 years ago that people would be listening to Murder Mystery podcasts and the like while driving, I'd have said you were out of your mind. Growing up I always enjoyed stations that had real personalities instead of just being a jukebox.

So will The Freak primarily go after KTCK, KRLD-FM, or both equally? Which one hypothetically could get harmed more by the new 97.1?

KTCK has the most audience, but KRLD-FM is also weaker and may be easier to claw some listeners away from.

The question is do talk audiences listen to stations or specific personalities.
Based on my talk programming experience in markets like LA, NYC, Chicago, Miami, Houston and Dallas I'd have to say that a station with a strong lineup helps introduce new hosts, but for each program the audience is motivated by the host.

Think of a talk station as a mall. We may like a certain mall (or shopping area) but we like some stores better than others. A new store near ones we like in that favorite mall has an initial advantage of location, but if the goods are not to our liking, we don't go back even if we visit that mall regularly.

And a bad personality can damage the station and surrounding dayparts or shows.

Don't forget Puerto Rico! Although they did keep music segments, WPRM has been doing the hot talk game for decades.

And I consulted the transformation of WUNO to all news and talk... I even created the name! That was nearly 40 years ago!
