New Sports Station Coming To DFW

They did say something along the lines of "eventually" those music blocks would be commercials. When they sell the time of course.

I’ve never heard of the sports map radio network, but I’m surprised and impressed Texas has essentially has it own sports radio network to where 97.1 doesn’t have to rely on espn or fox sports radio. I’m only saying this as a sports radio vet, but the “we’re not a sports station” gets old after a little bit, especially when you run sports overnight. I’m also surprised they really did eliminate rock entirely.

SportsMap is owned by Gow Media in Houston. Gow owns a sports radio station in Houston. This article has more details about the SportsMap programming that will air in overnights:

Other programming on the channel will include personalities from SportsMap, the national sports radio network owned by Houston-based Gow Media, which also owns CultureMap. Airing on The Freak will be SportsMap Radio's Jason Page, who hosts a show called The Cash In, and Cole Thompson, who hosts a show called Just Sayin' It; they'll debut on October 3 at 10 pm.

The station repeated The Downbeat from 7PM to 10PM, and then aired the above shows.

wonder if they will keep the KEGL calls or have already started the process of getting new call letters to match "The Freak" branding

Are they actually using Sports Map? Good grief. Sports Map's programming is garbage. I sure hope this is temporary filler.

It’s very bad. I can’t imagine how listeners in Dallas can connect with hosts with thick NY accents griping about nyc sports - like what I heard last night

Still no PD named as of yet:

How many stations have launched without a pd before? and, from what I gathered yesterday, management appears to be leaving them alone? If so, is this the future of I heart stations where management turns controls of stations to talent?

Not only that, but I hear the same advertisers I heard on the Russ Martin Show two years ago. They should give the Treehouse guys the overnight show. It beats repeating the daytime programming.
I noticed that too. Seems like all the clients didn’t mind the switch, which is certainly unique. But yes, especially since they’ve said 1,000 times they’re “not a sports station”. But, have sports shows running at nights lol

Or they were give a very special "early adopter" or "pioneer" rate. Since radio ads don't open saying, "this ad cost $xx" we don't know the conditions of the sale.

The demos of both formats are about the same, I don't think it would matter as much.

Seems temporary.
I can't come up with research to back it up, but from personal experience from people I know there are sports guys and non-sports guys. A lot of the non-sports guys are rock fans and like Russ Martin and Howard Stern, but when a show comes on where they are quoting sports statistics, the non-sports guys tune out. On the other side I know guys who live and breathe their sports teams, memorize statistics, and when the talk changes to pop culture, they consider it mindless chit chat and tune out. Sports guys and non-sports guys can be the same age, have the same income and even do the same thing for a living, aka the same demographic, but one guy would be bored to tears by the other guys favorite show. They have different hobbies.

I can remember trying to explain to a media executive why, back in the day of United Paramount Network, that Star Trek Enterprise Fans would all tune out in unison when they followed up sci-fi with their Big Time Rasseling Show. They don't get it until it blows up in their face.
