New Sports Station Coming

Yes, in genereal terms, it can.

But not this, which will likely result in the Tutera organization getting the station back in 6 months or less.

In fact, it might be the dumbest thing I've heard in a while.

Re: You're kidding, right?

What a joke. In the last ratings book WYGM had a 0.8, WHOO didn't even register (guess their not buying Arbitron anymore). The last time they showed up was in February and that was a 0.7 to WYGM's 0.3. Looks like now you'll divide up a 1.0 share 3 ways. Even New York City has only two sports stations and much more sports to cover then Orlando.

From the article:

Our long term plan is to establish WRSO in Orlando by eventually locating the station within a restaurant facility wherein live sports radio will be broadcast as diners enjoy a first class restaurant/media experience.

That's actually a great idea. Hopefully they'll get a percentage of the restaurant profits, because it's likely that the restaurant will make far more money than the radio station. Kind of like the ESPN Zone?

I'll start holding my breath for that to happen in 3....2....

I think the restaurant is the really dumb part of the idea. Now you have to make TWO businesses work.

And the ESPN Zone had an internationally recognized brand, as opposed to some no-names from Orlando.

No, just the restaurant...because the radio station won't make money. The radio station is just the gimmick, like a salad bar, that hopefully draws people in.

Bruce Cox was running around town from 2006-2009 talking about exactly this concept, and even signed a lease on a building in Clermont for the first location, which obviously never came to fruition. His company was called Talknsports.

Not much of a market in Orlando for sports as there is only one pro team and much of the population came from somewhere else. They will need to be very local as there are no good networks to affiliate with - Fox is on 740 and ESPN is on 1080 - ?????

How much did they pay for the station - any ideas?

Only 1 show will make the transition and that has been confirmed, the deal is already done. Going from genral talk to talking sports, any guesses?

How about Yahoo Sports Network, formerly Sporting News Radio. Then again, you said "no good networks."

I've often talked about this idea for LPFMs to follow: Put the radio station in a restaurant or club, do live broadcasts every night. You'll probably have more listeners inside the club than over the air. And if the restaurant is any good, you'll make enough money to pay for the radio station. With AM stations becoming boat anchors, owners need to think outside the box. The Disney folks will tell you that radio is only useful as a marketing tool for something else. Don't count on radio to make money, because it won't.

A Google search of the new owners indicates they are in the medical supply business.

So they will try to run simultaneously TWO businesses they about which they likely know little to nothing.

So they spent huge money to get an FM for ESPN in NY because.....
