New St. Louis Talker With A Programming Mix

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports on the flip of sports KRFT/1190 to talk tomorrow (3/15):

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/en...571310023C377?OpenDocument&highlight=2,"KRFT"

The station's syndicated hosts are from truly all over the talk radio spectrum. From Westwood One's Don Imus and Cox/Jones' Neal Boortz in mornings, to Air America's Al Franken in early afternoons, to urban-leaning sports talkers "The 2 Live Stews" in afternoon drive, and financial/advice shows (Dave Ramsey, Clark Howard) after that. Talk about your talk radio scheduling whiplash!

The "Stews", by the way, originate at KRFT's sister station in Atlanta, Big League Broadcasting sports WQXI/790. "Big League" also operates St. Louis sports talker KFNS/590 - KFNS-FM/100.7, and had been operating KRFT as a sports overflow station to KFNS.

Not sure I'd envy them trying to compete as the third talker behind KTRS and KMOX, both of which are formidable.
______________

Sounds like it's destined to be what we used to call a critically acclaimed 1.0 share.

Maybe KTRS-550 is going to go all-sports, now that they have the Cards.

In a way, it sounds like a midwest version of KGO except the spectrum is way wider...did the discussion of any local programming come up?

Kind of doubt it, they've just made several changes to "young up" the format.
______________

On that signal? Probably not.

It's actually not awful daytime (10KW), but drops to 22 WATTS at night.

And as far as an "opening" goes...KRFT was the second-tier sports talker to big brother KFNS/590-100.7. KTRS basically is not affected by it.

Westwood One had a good sales rep? :D

Yes, and although now long gone, Imus used to be on KFTK and perhaps did better than one could expect another syndicated morning show to do. Besides, WW1 is practically giving away Imus these days, including 2 or 3 stations where he's free by clearing a few hours of another show at night or one of their newscasts.

97.1's format (and the market apparently) calls for local morning talk; the station has gotten away from all hot/lifestyle talk to do strictly conservative issues, cited by the recent scaling back and now cancellation of John and Jeff overnights.

If that were to happen, I'd hope to see 1190 with a better schedule than this pitch-hitter rubbish.

All-out libtalk would be fine, but for a small chain, the signal seems suited for financial talk or something of the sort that would be trafficked mainly by day and could be brokered. How they plan to sell spots on this station is beyond me. I guess it'll end up in the KFNS post-sales pitch 99-cent bin... "add ten spots on 1190 to your order for just a buck... you never know what you'll find this time!"

KRFT didn't even show up doing Sporting News Network. A 1.0 share would be a winner.

I heard local Traffic and Weather reports four times an hour in drive time. Local Newscasts at the top and bottom of each hour.

No shows originating from St. Louis though.

I disagree. KTRS could have been formidable, but their new lineup is sub-par, with the exception of The Large Morning Show in the Afternoon, and even that seems to be losing it's luster.

While I don't see KRFT soaring up the ratings, I do think they picked the perfect time to launch another talker.

It's just an expression. There are some things you can't overcome with a format change. The coverage contour stays the same.
