New Star 94 morning team from Indianapolis

There used to be a flunkie on this ensemble who changed his name to "Peyton Manning" on the show.

Wonder if he'll be itchin' to play the "Joey Harrington" card?

Okay so here was my earlier post on the Star morning vacancy...

<<"Do Dan Bowen and Don Benson have the will and ability to find or build a show that's different and compelling enough to make anyone want to sample them for any length of time? Or are they doing what's standard practice...scouring the country for chuckleheads who are a) available, b) cheap, and c) willing to be heavily consultant-controlled? Management there hasn't built a reputation of thinking outside any boxes, and bringing in "just another morning show" isn't going to make anything significant happen.">>

I will say that while I wasn't expecting much, what I didn't expect was for them to decide to go head-to-head against the Bert Show, and do it by bringing in a smaller market Bert Show clone whose station didn't make it. This is gonna be like watching a fight in Rocky 12. But congratulations to B98 and Kelly & Alpha, who just got handed a ticket for a free ride on the 25-54 Express!

I think they seem perfect for Star... this is exactly the kind of show I thought they would get.
I agree completely! I'm pretty impressed after watching the link to the youtube video that Rodney posted. They seem like a great fit, and the girl seems really genuine. Here's the deal: someone like her should be able to CONNECT to Star's P-1 pretty well, I'd think. And man, NICE digs they're leaving in Indy!!

Umm...not to bust your bubbles, but how is a 24-year-old girl possibly going to relate to Star's 58 year-old P-1s?? If you do the math, thats quite a difference in age. Just stating the obvious...

This looks like a good move for the show as well as for Star 94 since the Indianapolis station is flipping formats to news/talk. But the station's ratings as a CHR had been growing nicely.

Star had to go younger. With this team you get youth, they seem fun, topical, and mom's can listen with their kids in the car. They fit the Star on-air mold perfectly.

They will do well...trust me!

If Star 94 adds hip-hop product, it might work even better. Star 94 has been steadily losing to Q100, and it sounds like they need to keep up with the Jones'.

B98.5's Kelly and Alpha stands to gain from this the most. That "58 year old" you quote probably listens to Steve and Vikki in the morning, and goes elsewhere for music (or talk) during the rest of the day (probably either B98.5, the River, or WSB-AM).

One of the unique features of Star 94 is that it leans older (that is why the station is sans hip-hop). It also is unique in that it is not owned by the 5C cartel (Cox, Clear Channel, CBS, Citadel, Cumulus), so there is no real pressure (insurance and financial services are the bread and butter of that company, radio is something they just do on the side). However, LF doesn't want to do anything on the side anymore, so they will sell the station sometime soon. To help matters out, it seems to me that it is in Star's best interest to start over. It seems to me that Star should either go pure CHR (with hip-hop) or hot AC (80s, 90s, today).

Agreed that they had to go younger. Star 94 was most likely looking for a team that could grow with the station. Keep in mind: when Steve and Vikki started at Star 94, they were 17 years younger than they are today.

I feel like I am the only one excited about this show. I watched several of the YouTube videos and I think they are going to give the Bert Show a run for their money. I was a long time listener of the old Morning X, eventually converting to the Bert Show and then flipping back and forth when Toucher was on. Never have been into Steve & Vicki, so I think this will be a refreshing show for the station.

Also, I spent some time on each of their MySpace pages and it is clear that they had a lot of fans who already miss the fact they aren't on the air. They were obviously doing something right in Indy.

If Star wants to reach a younger audience, this is the show. Check out these great moments:

That girl is sexy as hell. She should have her on show, preferably on TV, instead of buried underneath the standard issue CHR dorks. Radio is so stupid. They just cannot think outside of the standard template drawn up in 1983. One of those two guys is entirely unnecessary on that show, maybe both.

I will say this...Star has needed for a long time to decide what it was going to be, young leaning CHR or Hot AC. It looks like they've firmly made that decision. It's just not the fight I expected them to pick.

Certainly doesn't hurt having a sexy girl on the show, that was smart. Even older people like young hotties. But it leads to the next question for Star...are they ready to pour the promotions and marketing dollars behind the show...and in the face of a pending sale?

Are more changes coming? Rod Stadler is the best news person in the market. Extraordinary writing solid delivery. I can't see a place with maturity there now. Attention Pete Spriggs: you got any openings? Steal Stadler. Star is for sale. If you were thinking about buying the station and the chain would this excite you.
Remember, so far they are unproven in a top 10 market ( remember Moby's replacement team that didn't have what it takes. Their current station changed formats. If they were that good wouldn't it have been a more difficult decision to give them up so easily in Indy? Jacksonville is right. They were available. But realizing every show that follows Steve & Vikki will be compared to them, it's probably necessary to do something radically different to avoid confusion even is many leave for B98.5. Why does Cox radio get all the breaks? Bob Neil must be living right.

With Giant Brian and Superphat Mikey there is no way Atlanta will be named America's Fittest City. Perhaps it's dumbest or hokey-est?

Truth be told, when you first heard there was a new, three-person team from Indy, who else was hoping that two of them were named Bob & Tom?

From Rodney's column:

http://www.accessatlanta.com/blogs/...tlanta/radiotalk/?cxntfid=blogs_radio_tv_talk

"Bert Show rocks: Q100’s Bert Show has been the biggest start-from-scratch morning show success story this decade in Atlanta. And what’s amazing is it keeps improving in numbers. The show has been a regular top 5 presence 18 to 34 for a couple of years (No. 2 this past summer) but its appeal has expanded. It now has landed top 5 25 to 54 for the third time in 4 quarters, hitting fourth for the first time."

Star has chosen to step right in front of a speeding train.
