New Station in Bakersfield? What would you do?

Now that the market finally has a true CHR at 93.1...it begs the question: If you had an FM in the Bakersfield market...what would you do with it? FM Talk? AC? Country? So many have come and gone in the last 10 years...what format would you try to make a go of it?

Anybody who tried to launch a new station in Bakersfield is a fool. It's the most over-radioed market in the country. Why do you think there are so many unbuilt/partially built/licensed-but-dark stations? (I can think of at least four right off the top of my head)

If I was put in charge of putting up a new station in Bako this is what I would do....

It would be a pirate/jack format for the most part but based off of rock/outlaw country/punk...random hour would look something like this...and yes there would be DJ's on the air.

1. AC/DC - Hells Bells
2. The Who - Baba O'Riley
3. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - East Bound and Down
4. Social Distortion - Story of my life
5. Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues
6. Waylon Jennings - Midnight Rider
7. Cheap Trick - Surrender
8. Scorpions - Rock you like a hurricane
9. Rolling Stones - Brownsugar
10. Hank III - Cecil Brown
11. Nashville Pu$$y - Hate and Whiskey
12. Van Halen - Running with the devil
13. Dropkick Murphys - Dirty Glass
14. David Allen Coe - You Never Even Called Me by my Name
15.Reverend Horton Heat - Rockin' Dog

I have a pandora station like this and it is all I listen to at work/home. Being that this market is a big redneck market...something like this might just work. I would also make sure we had a sales/promotion team that understood what the station was about. We would be at all the Fomoso events, bike nights, car shows, bars, strip clubs, etc...

I would also make sure the weekends were filled with quality contests, specialty shows ranging from a rockabilly show to a local show to name a couple...I would cater to the market vs making every station a company owns in every market sound the same.

I'd listen to that playlist...except for that cheap trick nonesense.
Play up the "Oildale's Very Own" concept and rock out
I'd include Kid Rock, Skynard, Allman Bros, Tool, G&R, Limp Bizkit, Big & Rich and even the Beastie Boys.

oh yeah, i have those on my playlist to. I just made a random hour to post here. I don't have limp bizkit on my playlist on pandora but yeah they still have appeal on the older stuff.

I think looser formats are what local radio stations need to do to survive...looser formats that work together that is.

If you look at anybodys mp3 player or pandora stations very few people actually only have one genre of music. Most have a variety.

you must have the bizkit!!!
pop in some foo fighters, j.cash, toadies, white stripes, aerosmith (nothing post pump), the halen, toby keith, allan jackson, hank wms jr, yokum & buck of course, the kinks, and you may even throw a little james brown & jackie wilson in there.

It would be fun to dig up some old radio shows like Burns &Allen

I like lotusfelchers playlist and some more of that but I would for sure have live jocks on air 24-7.Known names too --Meathead,DeRoo,Anne Kelly,Bell from Hell,Rachael Leagan,KC Mcbride,EJ,Romeo..Steal all the good talent from all the stations and ....ahhh..I'm just dreamin..
