New Station In Lewes DE

Radio-Locator gets 3 of 5 stars for up-to-date info. They only publish ON-AIR stations that have CP's, not proposed staation CP's. They still have 92.3 W222AL Cape May as rebroadcasting 106.9 from Philly. It is translating WIBG-FM Avalon since August.

But Seaford / (Dover?) and Wilmington ARE getting new VHF TV stations. Ch 5 & 2. http://rbr.com/delaware-getting-two-vhf-stations/

My information (from the FCC Daily Digest, earlier this week) is that the channel 5 move from Seaford to Dover is strictly a formal proposal at this point. (but it *has* been formally proposed to the FCC -- it's not just the permittee's pipe dream) The documents say no technical changes are proposed. Often, that doesn't hold after things get granted...

Channel 2 in Wilmington isn't that far along. The FCC has been ordered to approve the move, although with channel 4 in Atlantic City already on the air & covering most of the same area, I wouldn't be betting any money on anyone actually bothering to build channel 2.

Yep, the WPBD (Lewes FM) CP is solidly in the FCC DB. It was applied for in October 2007 and granted in May 2010.

As for the translators, even the FCC records on what a translator relays are pretty sketchy. The process for changing the station relayed is pretty informal.

The cobnstruction permtr foir 91.5 in Lewes expires on 5/20/2013. Hope they get cracking on this one or do something to get it extended. And there is a translator on 91.7 in Lewes, guess that will be moved if anything happens with 91.5.

And it is now exactly one month until the permit expires. 91.5 is on the clock...

HD TV sucks on VHF

True, channel 2 is the last channel I'd want my DTV station to be on. However, if channel 2 is the only channel I can get pretty much for free, I'm certainly going to take it! The legal loophole that's creating channels 2/3/4/5 only applies to those VHF-low channels. To get anything higher, you need to buy an existing station & pay a LOT more.

In any case, I don't think these owners really care about the OTA audience. While the *actual* coverage of a DTV station on channel 2 may not be very good, the *theoretical* coverage is just fine. And it's that theoretical coverage that determines where that station gets on cable & satellite. Which is how most people would be watching this new station, even if it was on a UHF frequency.

WPBD Lewes doesn't seem to have made its deadline, and the new station is no longer listed in the FCC database. The BBN translator at 91.7 is still on the air at Lewes.

Who has to watch it OTA they should be on cable and the satellite services. You are right VHF does suck with 8VSB. During HD tests in DC it was assumed that VHF would work just fine.
