Re: Pics, anyone?
Were these really the former WGY studios?
As a teenager, I hung out with my dad at the WGY studios on Balltown Road Schenectady from '73-'80, and I don't remember anything that small - other than the small newsroom in between the actual WGY studio and the production room (later used for the live version of WGFM).
The engineers area was also "across the glass" nearby and housed the very slow moving 24/7 reel (that recorded everything for FCC and advertiser verification purposes), as well as the reel-to-reel automation system that ran Rock 99 WGFM, when they used TM Stereo Rock from '73-'80.
The WGY studios then were pretty bare, but PD Mike Neff had them "spruced up" about 1978 or so. The big deal then was to extend the new red wall-to-wall carpeting to the walls as well! It not only cut down on sound, but gave the studios a plush, albeit a 70's "shag carpet" feel! They were fairly large and had room for stand-alone racks of carts, where the oldies were kept - organized by year. The commercials were kept on wall mounted cart racks in the back of the room. There was NO outside view of anything - just the newsroom window and the engineer window. (The PD's and GM's had the rooms with a view that faced west toward Balltown Road)
Of course, back then, everything was indeed analog - not a computer in sight except over at Rock 99 with the green CRT which ran the automation system!. Mostly everything at 'GY was carted, with the exception of a few rare LP's/45's from time to time. And....no show producers either. The jocks and news staff did it all. The engineer was there to help if there was a problem. All they had to do was follow the log book........
There was also much more flexibility in song selection. All the book would say was "up tempo oldie about 2:20". I actually helped in the song selection on those Saturday mornings........
