New Studios for WAAO

WAAO-FM in Andalusia moved into new facilities in downtown Andalusia this weekend. WAAO had been in its previous location since the mid 90s, when the owners acquired WKYD AM 920, and moved the WAAO studios from the present WAAO transmitter site to the WKYD building. It was a building constructed for WCTA (call letters changed in 76) in the early 60s. WKYD no longer exists. The new WAAO studio facilities are in a completely restored old building on East Three Notch Street.

Congratulations to Lee Williams & his Crew!
They do a great job of serving the community.
Did Charlie Grantham do the new studio install?

Yes, Charlie, with assistance from Sandy Boyd, did the new installation. The station has a new AudioArts console in the control room. Another new feature for WAAO is that Lee and Debbie's morning show is simulcast on W40BE television. W40BE has a camera in WAAO's control room, plus other cameras that show outside views from the square looking out East Three Notch Street and looking at the courthouse. W40BE http://www.w40be.com is located on the square, in the same building where WAKA has their South Alabama Newsroom, so the views are similar to what WAKA shows on their newscasts. Although I (Wade Giddens) didn't have anything to do with the new facility, I did get to do the first local live shift from the new station on Sunday morning. Actually, some of us on the staff did give Lee our opinions on what console to buy, and how to arrange the pots, but Charlie and Sandy did the engineering work. The building was a shell, with no roof or interior at all a year ago. When I said totally renovated, I meant TOTALLY renovated. Lee, Debbie, Charlie and telephone people were still doing some work when I stopped by today. I have to say, it is the nicest radio facility I've seen. There is a good article in today's Andalusia Star-News,

You are welcome. I failed to mention that W40BE, in their television simulcast of the morning show, goes to weather graphics, radar, etc. when Lee is giving the weather forecast.

Thanks for the additional info and the link to the newspaper story.
I wish them the best from their new location.

Good to hear about WAAO.

Now, what's the latest from WTBF? I don't want to call you out as their engineer on a message board!

Well, I am the engineer for WTBF, just not for WAAO. Maybe some background info would be helpful. I was the Chief Operator (engineer)/Morning Show DJ/Program Director for WAMI, Opp in 2002 when I left full-time broadcasting to go to X-ray school. I stayed on at WAMI as Chief Operator and weekend guy until the spring of 03. At that time, I left X-ray school, and took an almost full-time announcer's position at WAAO. I still intended to leave the broadcasting field. In 2004, I made a second attempt at X-ray school. I left X-ray school again in the spring of 05. Both times I left X-ray school was for family/personal reasons. Anyway, I needed a job and WTBF wanted me to be their engineer. But, I stayed on at WAAO as a DJ. So, that is how I wound up in the weird position of being the engineer, but not a DJ at one station, and a DJ, but not the engineer at another.

Now, for what is new at WTBF. WTBF is starting a new Spanish language program on Sunday evenings called, "Jackie En La Noche". It will be Sunday evenings at 10:00. By the way, WTBF (AM) celebrates 60 years on the air this year.

That is the latest from this DJ/engineer. Anybody want some books on radiography (X-ray)? Who knows, maybe I'll try again, even though all of my X-ray courses have now expired and I'd have to start from the beginning.
