In the last couple of weeks we've seen Lite turn to Jack. 1280 has flipped Spanish to Talk and 104.7 is broadcasting country music from Moapa Valley. Now, we have heard plenty about Jack and predictions for its success and failure. We are due for at least one more format change...you would think from Star. Where are all the radio geek prognosticators?

Can 1280 make a dent on the only AM in the Top 10?

Will 104.7 do anything to shake KWNR's complete market dominance?

What will Star do? Soft AC, The Edge, Country, status quo?

People, for a change there is some movement in the market yet the board is silent.

Great topics. I'll go ahead and guess. A few months ago I predicted shakeup in the Spanish language radio battles. I think you were the one that called my prediction "Spanish Chaos". You have to admit I called that one right.

Will they add a local show or two? Will they spend money to promote or advertise the station? If they do, 1280 could become a player. If not, my prediction is they will not make a dent on KXNT.

Will they improve their signal? Even if they do, it will not match the 100,000 watts of KWNR. In this situation, 104.7 is better off trying to fill a niche such as classic county (which is what they almost sound like already) than try to directly compete against KWNR. Some listeners will put up with a poor signal if the station offers music you can't get elsewhere. If the two stations play identical music, the heritage station with the far superior signal will win easily.

I have heard rumors of all 4. I don't know what they plan on doing. My prediction is if they stay with the status quo they will fall below a 2 share and consistently stay the lowest rated full market grade signal in the market.
 
104.7 can barely be heard in the valley. Even though country MAY be the format-de-jor to come in, I don't think the signal will help them, and KWNR will continue without so much as a blink.

1280, the same thing. As I listen (no imaging, no compelling programming), I hear a right wing wanna be station. Even if they pick up a local show, their competition would at most be with KNUU. KXNT and KDWN would not be hurt at all. In fact, if 1280 markets, it would bring more people to the AM dial, ultimatley helping 720 and 840, as their programming (at least most of it) is top notch.

The signal is nearly useless, they might as well simulecast 1280.

It will do about as well as 1340 did with talk, did that ever show up in the ratings? Actually, it won't do as well, since the night signal (which is also the first half of morning drive in the winter) isn't very good. Unless they go to brokered talk, then ratings don't matter. But KDWN, KLAV, and KSHP have most of the brokered stuff.

Maybe they should go back to what they were doing years ago, selling time to preachers.

Most of 840's programming is top notch. The only thing top notch about KDWN is their signal.

The obvious based on ratings would be country, but unless you have a tremendous amount of money to spend it can be very difficult to take on a dominent country station. Most loyal audience of any format.

Soft AC is a possibility, but is it too close to KJUL? A couple of years down the road, KJUL will probably be a soft AC station.

Would they have a chance with mainstream CHR?

Maybe "Casino Radio"... like 1140 used to do?? At least it would be cheap!
