New Talent ID voiceover on Action News

I only caught the 11 PM show last night, but there was a new ID with what sounded like a new announcer. However, they only said "Action News DVLNP with Jim Gardner." I guess they still haven't named permanent sportscasters to the shows since Gary Papa passed away. It seems they rotate Jamie, Jeff, and Keith among all the PM shows with no regularity.

Also, I know Cecily is the official weather personality at 11 (though she wasn't named last night) and 5:30. It seems for now that Adam does the 5 and 6 three days a week; then Cecily does all four PM shows on the two days he is off so that he can do weekends. I know that was the arrangement when Dave semi-retired, but do they really need two weather people on in the evening? It just seems like a lack of continuity with the split shows. In that case, I guess it makes sense why no new talent ID was recorded for the 5 and 6. It could be Adam or Cecily, depending on the day. Originally, Dave did the noon and 5 while Jim O'Brien did the news, and Jim picked up the 6 and 11 weather. Dave did all PM shows once Jim passed away.

Did any other shows have new IDs?

The 5PM and the 6PM have new opens. 6PM is identical to the 11 and the 5PM just says Tynan, Williams and Malpass. One thing I noticed was Jeff Kaye really needs to give his pipes a rest as he's sounded horrible doing those voiceovers. His voice has never sounded the same since his bout with throat cancer.

Wonder if they re-did the weekend mornings version, the one other that was missing talent IDs. After so long without one, they finally did it, only to have Erica leave.

Yeah, they only had that one in use for about 6 months.

Shame what has become of Jeff Kaye's voice. It may be of some interest to note that before Gary Papa's death, the 6 o'clock news had the oldest recording from the early 90's, Being that as less then a year ago it was the only newscast without any change since Don Tollefson left. Kaye's voice sounded great. Perhaps pvi should ditch the idea of getting updated versions. Instead use a older version, and omit everything after DVLNP.

I think the one in this intro is at his peak. I can't remember a better action news intro

Yeah, they may have to look into replacing Kaye soon. Does Kaye do any other VO work anymore, or is revised 6 intros it?

EDIT: Actually I think that whole clip is of Action New's peak. Look at the chemistry they all have, and everyone is having fun.

I know the 6 & 11 are using just the first portion, with no talent ID. The weekend was still using the new one with Melissa Magee last weekend.

I guess this may mean the end of any new Kaye intros.

BTW, in a related note. After Jim O'Brien was killed, action news used an intro the first few nights without O'Brien with Paul Norton doing the VO. I guess Kaye wasn't available to do a new one right away.

I've heard that as of yesterday apparently WPVI undid all the recent changes. 1996 all over again?

It's been said before, and I'll say it again: Philadelphians are creatures of habit. Not only do they want their WPVI news, they want all the elements intact!

Well in 1996 I've always though of it as nitpicky complainers constipated from their Geno's cheese-steaks over harmless music updating. Here in 2010 I feel the complaints are completely justified, no one wants to hear the lost voice of a once great announcer, it's simply sad. This time WPVI attempted to stay with tradition by using Jeff Kaye again as announcer, even if it meant wheeling him out of the nursing home to it.

This is the third time recently that WPVI went with the if it ain't broke don't fix it attitude into something and it backfired. Perhaps some change is good. Perhaps there is something broke at WPVI. It's why viewers are suggesting for a new announcer, rather than continuing to rely of Kaye.

It looks like just conjecture that there were viewer objections. Anyone have any actual evidence?

The fact that the new recordings only lasted all of two weeks on air before returning to the nicer sounding talentless recordings that date back to 2002.

Which is conjecture as to the reason. The weekend morning ones used before the most recent set didn't sound noticeably different (nor would they have, being of similar vintage), and weren't changed. This far, no one has come up with anything that discounts other possibilities, just taking guesses.

Well they do have message boards they monitor for feedback. If it wasn't viewer complaints then was either an internal one or they simply realized their error on their own. Or all of the above.

I agree with imhomerjay. We don't know that the station got complaints. Anyone incharge at that station could've been listening and said wow this VO intro stinks. Jim Gardner might've complained for all we know.

My guess is they got Kaye to do the new VO, and neither the news director, station manager, Gardner himself, or anyone else who had the power to yank it bothered to listen to it before it aired.

And why should they? Kaye's voice has been on the decline for years, but it was still bearable as recently as this past June when the weekend news got a custom intro that was only used for a few months, because Erica Grow left at the end of November.

I know I shouldn't be surprised it happened, but shouldn't things like these really be ran by somebody with some power before they go to air. I find it hard to believe that someone higher up heard these and thought they sounded okay.

Not really. It wasn't anything new, and again remember they had just got a new weekend version back in June that was fine. They been ordering new versions since the 70's without a problem. I would imagine that the higher up guy would count on the people in the editing room to tell him/her if a line was flubbed, ran too long, or anyother thing that would require the new version useless. They can't micromanage every aspect.
