For a second I thought a new station was signing on that I had somehow missed hearing about being approved by the CRTC. No Canwest, CKRD-TV is not signing off and being replaced miraculously on the same channel with a new station with the call letters CHTV, it's the same CKRD-TV with a "CH" brand and the loss of the CBC affiliation.

I don't like how broadcasters like to tell viewers that stations are signing off and new stations are taking their place, when in fact it is just a branding change under the same license. CHUM did that when CKVU-TV changed from ckvu13 to Citytv Vancouver. That does nothing for continuity and consistency for viewers.

And...also disturbing...I thought A stood for Alberta, A channel in Edmonton Alberta, and A channel in Calgary Alberta...then City(Chum group) comes along and goes the extra mile to proove me wrong.<P ID="signature">______________

There's nothing CHUM can do to prove you wrong, because the original application to the CRTC by Craig to start A-Channel referred to the system as "The Alberta Channel". Sorry CHUM, we're a little smarter than that.

...so now, there's no A channel in Alberta, but there's an A channel in Barrie Ontario, and various other places.

What does "A" stand for now?...it's like...

"What'cha watchin'"
"A channel"
"I know you're watching a channel...I see that...but what channel is it?"

About as annoying as the days of ON TV.(which actually meant Ontario Television)

Probably just as bad as in the late-1970s and early-1980s, when some US cities had an over-the-air subscription TV serice called "On TV" (no relation to CHCH, of course). If a show was "On TV" you can't tell if they mean a particular channel, or the "On TV" pay channel.

And don't get me started on "It" -- as in the early-1980s subscription Tv xchannel in Detroit.

Isn't that what become the local Pax affiliate, WPXD 31? Seems to me "It" was on channel 31.

Exactly -- ch.31 started as WIHT, carrying mainly "It" subscription TV. When "It" ended in the mid-1980s, ch.31 carried general entertainment for awhile, until flipping to Home Shopping (as WBSX) around 1988. It flipped to Pax shortlt after Paxson got ahold of the station.
