New Times Best of Phoenix

Best Personality: Beef Vegan, KWSS
Best Morning Show: Holmberg, KUPD
Best Blues/Jazz: KJZZ
Best Alt-Rock: KWSS
Best Country: KNIX
Best Sports Show: Doug & Wolf, KTAR AM
Best News: KJZZ
Best Lamptimer: um....who could that be?

And nowhere to found in any categories this year (because they're both Pandora magnets): 550 AM & 92.3 FM

Didn't I hear Barry Young tell his listeners not to participate in this? So when he doesn't win he can say "I told my listeners not to participate in the Best of..." Good strategy Barry.

Does the New Times BOP even matter anymore? I mean, they could print the same list every year, and all the players would still be the same. They "jumped the shark" in the late-'90s.

Asking if the New Times still matters is like asking if KTAR is still a "news/talk" radio station (not anymore it isn't.) Village Voice Media still makes a lot of money - those full page ads, let alone the 1/8 ads, ain't cheap - and when terrestrial AM/FM's, except for KWSS and KJZZ, don't play any halfway-decent music anymore, the better question to be asking is: Why can't any commercial stations better represent this town? You shouldn't have to be ashamed to be from Phoenix when you turn on the radio.

With picks that are vanilla (KNIX? Doug & Wolf?) and some that are borderline "payola" (Holmberg on KUPD - admit it New Times, he had a much better show in 2006 than he has today, and how many years in a row has he won this prestigious honor?), it's hard not to laugh at some of their choices anymore.

I suppose the kiss of death that used to be the New Times Best of Phoenix award has finally worn off.

Back in the day it seemed like every station that won would change format within 6 months.
