New TIS on air

9500 Gilman Drive-
After testing for a few days last summer, UCSD has powered up their 1610 traveler's information station. Traffic, weather, and
other emergencies will be covered. It's a lot weaker than last year, which probably interfered with the Zoo's TIS.
This is in contrast to the somewhat useless 1620 at the border, and the totally useless stadium 1500, which has been carrier-only
since the last Superbowl was here.
And,if you are patient, 1610 from Mountain Pass CA, (I-15 just before Nevada line) can be heard here at night.

Yet another useless waste of taxpayer money.

So just to review: No transmitter for the student run radio station but a TIS on 1610.

I could be wrong, but I'm under the impression that no more frequencies in the non-commercial band are available in the San Diego area.

They would either have to have the State of California buy the KSDS frequency if it ever was put up for sale, or do like some schools such as Cal St. San Bernardino or La Verne University have done, and go on the Internet.

Webcasting would probably give them a better chance for a larger audience, especially with younger demographics.

When I went to school there in the early 70s, the campus station was called KSDT. Are they still using those calls? ???

1610 update- As of Wednesday, power was increased. Audible in the El Cajon valley area, very strong just about
anywhere North of El Cajon Blvd. and up the coast.
I'm waiting to see if they actually will perform a "public service" by actually airing traffic advisories/conditions.or
will it just be repeating the station I.D. and its ownership. L.A.'s airport high power 530 actually broadcasts useful
info for the motorist; and, with a good receiver, can be heard in San Diego
In Downtown, two other TIS locations are Lindbergh Field, and the Convention Center; 1640 and 1690...
It looks like there's some interest in San Diego's college stations; will soon post about some of them; legal and
otherwise.

There are signs on the 78 corridor for the TIS stations in Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, and Escondido. The antenna for one is on the south side of the 78 near the 'Food For Less' grocery store. The stations are at 540 AM.

Being part of UCSD, it will soon a air a loop that keeps saying, "Veer to the left, veer to the left..."

Stupid question, what does TIS stand for. Is that a real low power transmitter that is usually used for road/construction information or can anyone use one? Just wondering.
