New to internet radio scene many questions....

Hello All

Good to meet you all. So for many years well ok my entire life I have wanted to do sports talk radio. I always found a way to talk myself out of it. Whether it be saying I have no time or no money, or just making myself think I could not do it. But recently life reminded me its short and you need to do something if you love it. And well I love talking sports. So anyway I plan to start my own sports talk radio show. I have the time to do the show 5 days a week, 3 hours a day. Before I ask all my questions let me say this. I am doing this as a passion project. If in the future enough people listen and I can make some money doing it great. If not I still plan to do it. If I spend the first month talking to myself then so be it. I am determined to try. It will not be a source of income right now so nobody has to worry about telling me I will fail lol. But I have several questions so hopefully you can all help me or point me to where I can get help

1- What is best site to do the hosting from? Radio.com? Internetradio.com? What do you recommend that will not break me with monthly fees?

2- Should I use a software and which one is best? I want to be able to easily take calls from people so that is important to me. I want them to be able to be listening in the car or at home through either the company site I go with or an app or whatever these sites use. But them calling in without needing to do anything but dial a number from their phone is important to me

3- Do I need to create my own app for people to listen or can they get my show from a listing of the hosting site? And if I need an app how can i create one easily that again wont break the bank?

4- Last question. I have the name of the show, bought the domain, will build a website. Do I need to trademark the name? I have seen so many people with so many different answers on the web it left me confused more then anything.

Thanks in advance and again glad to be here.

Did i post this in the wrong section to get answers to these questions? Maybe someone can point me to the right section. OR recommend another radio community where this could be answered?

There's only a couple of webcasters on here as far as I know -- it may be a while before one of them sees this thread.

I have used this host before and they are cheap host is decent https://www.epichosts.co.uk/rav.htm#s go with the child stream

Just about all the free radio automation program suck the only free one to go with is Radiodj you have to install Mysql and a 6+ year old computer will not be able to run it. For a small internet radio station Radiodj is kinda overkill. I use Radioboss by DJsoft it is nice and easy to use but it is a somewhat $$$.

Here is a site with a like 30 different intern radio directories you can add you station to https://addyourradio.com/?fbclid=IwAR1OTeC6PjV-I1GhO4NTpQphFJwbRpdECO_v-89_dQ09UgmUNSvHC3eVi4M

IMHO now is the wrong time to start a internet radio station to much competition and streaming sites like Youtube Deezer Spotify and Itunes has made internet radio 80% less than it use to be. 10 to 15 years ago you could get 50+ listeners if your station averages 30 listeners now your very luck your station will average 4 to 10 listeners not worth it really.

Your best option is see if you can do a weekly 2 to 4 hrs show for a station that averages 100 to 175 listeners that plays the same music your show plays

The answer depends on what you want to do with the name. If you want to merchandise the name in some way, you should trademark it. If you want to ensure no one else will attempt to use the name, you should trademark it. If you want to cover yourself, so you don't get sued for using someone else's name, you should trademark it. If none of that matters, and you're just a hobbyist who has a cool name, then it's up to you. Registration costs a few hundred bucks. But just registering the domain name doesn't replace trademarking the name.

Creating an app has to do with the content. Are you creating a lot of unique content that goes beyond simply playing someone else's licensed music? Then an app might be a good idea. There are some free app creators on the web. You get what you pay for. Registering the app at the app store is also pretty important.

If your station only averages 5 to 15 listeners and you do not have the money to get 50 to 75 T shirts and 250 bumper stickers created I would not get the name trademarked. Now if your station average 50+listeners and you can afford to get T shirts and bumper stickers made then the name trademarked for 5 yeas

thank you for the info. This will be for sports talk radio.

Worst 2 formats for internet radio stations are talk radio of any type religious sports all news and really wide variety play a early 70s classic rock track then a 90s rap track then country song from 1984 then a rock track from the late 90s then r&b track from 1988 last a pop track from 1985. Now you could have either of these two formats and they could work 70s to early 2000s rap rnb blues reggae or classic rock southern rock and outlaw country from the mid 60s to early 80s.
