New to XM - Little help?

I know almost nothing about XM, but I think it’s time to take the plunge. I like the idea of a small handheld radio, but I want something that works for car and home too. I have no problem getting home/car kits for the right radio. Any tips for a newbie? Anybody have the Samsung NeXus?

I received a Delphi My-Fi for Christmas last year and I am very happy with it. It has an adapter for the car and goes through the tape player and also has a home docking station for my stereo. It is also portable and I carry it when biking or walking and works very well.
Full disclosure: I am by no means an audiophile with a $20,000 stereo system in either my home or car. There have been numerous posts about the sound quality (or lack thereof) on the different XM receivers. For me, this unit is perfect: good sound, portability and wide choice of channels with no commercials is what I am looking for. I would suggest trying a couple different receivers at the store to see what best fits your needs.

If you want a live portable hand-held to walk around with and listen to live radio, the Inno and Helix are the best ones, and the next best would be the MyFi, Tao, or Airware.

I've seen the NeXus. I don't own one, but it's very small in size. It's not a live portable, but works in the car and at home. You can also record programming on it and store your MP3s, and listen to recorded programming on-the-go. There's 2 versions: NeXus 50, and NeXus 25. Crutchfield currently has a $50 rebate offer on both.

If you don't care about portability or storage, and just want it in the car and home, I'd say go for the Roady XT or the SkyFi 2. Both are currently very cheap. The SkyFi 2 has a 30 minute delay system so that you can pause/rewind/fast-forward live programming.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Looks like I’m going with the Inno, but it may have to wait ‘till Christmas. One of my concerns is traffic reporting. Is the XM traffic coverage as good as the local stuff?

I don't know your locale, but I find the Chicago traffic reports to be at least as good as the regular stations here. I ride the tollways and the Chicago stations don't mention them most of the time. XM covers all the major roads. Generally I trust the XM more than locals.

I check out Atlanta traffic every now and then in drive times. If it's on the half hour I might tune in to WSB. I've used it only every so often, but mainly because Atlanta traffic is so predictable in PM drive. Connector's backed up, wreck at Pleasant Hill on I-85, 400 is backed up to Old Milton Parkway, same ol' same ol'.

Good point. I guess as long as I get the "red alerts" I'm good.
