There are rumors about a New CBS top 40 ( CHR/Pop ) Station poping up in New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, San Francisco, Baltimore/Washington D.C. Area and Boston . If this rumor is true , what Boston CBS radio station will flip to Top 40 ( Mix 98.5 ?) ? This rumor story is on allaccess.com .

hmmm, could another chr even work in Boston?

Depends on what PPM's show for the next month or two. PPM samplings seem to clearly favor CHR stations in LA and NY. Kiss could have huge PPM numbers if the same trend holds true for Boston. In that case, it wouldn't be a huge surprise to see a second mainstream CHR by summer. I'd say a second CHR is probably more likely than FM sports.

I read an article on All Access that mentioned some of those major markets possibly making changes to CHR but I didn't see anything about Boston. Where did you read that story?

Click on Net News on allaccess.com ( Tuesday Feb. 17 2009 ) . Checkout the bottom half of the article tittle " CBS format flip in Big D... and elsewhere ".

It would be about time! And if PPM substantiates the top 40 pie being that big in Boston, more power to CBS for thinking about taking a slice of it. The arbs have clearly shown the trend simply with Kiss and Jamn's #'s alone, not to mention the format itself is at it's most viable as we speak.

An aggressive, mainstream-rhythmic leaning Top 40 station with tons more variety - launched with a major marketing campaign, very clear street presence, live, local and informative dj's for a change, and some clever imaging that exploits Kiss's weaknesses.

Can you say 'good old fashion radio war' anyone? I can smell all of the disenfranchised Matty-loving soccer moms coming over now!

Say Mix is the station to flip to Top 40 if it happens -- do you think they'd keep the same staff, or hire a completely new one?

I have not listen to mix lately . Is Lady D still on Mix 98.5 ? If so, I would think she will stay on 98.5 if there a format flip to Chr/Pop .

The mix format seems stale...the jocks on there are all great (gregg daniels really is one of the best jocks around), and the new morning show even sounds good (i heard Karson bitching and moaning the other day about a parking ticket he got in charlestown on the way one way dead end street he lives on and giggled to myself)...I really do think the ppm will tell a lot, and maybe a new chr would be a great move on CBS's part, we'll find out soon enough

Talk about stale, that's why Lander is no longer there. He became a mailman like Howie on WRKO. He just kept mailing it in show after show. You can get away with it in the PM, but not AM. Too much competition.

I've enjoyed hearing the new Mix morning show a few times. I think they'll be ok.

Yes Lady D is still on there

@Jay, yes, nobody mentioned WBCN. I highly doubt that @Jay

Because everyone is guessing MIX 98.5, is because their format is the cloest they come to KISS 108

Also, no one mentioned Oldies 103.3 (At the current moment, WROR 105.7) is slowly (very slowly) playing some more Motown Music, and some Disco music (very slowly)

So @Everyone, if the rumer is true, it can be any one of these mentioned stations

If rumer is true, Programming Management should put on ALL of their radio announcers on LIVE (except the wekend syndicated shows) other than that, they should put EVERYONE ON LIVE!!!!!!!!!. Another thing they should do, I know it is CHR, but they should focus on NEW R&B Music. Not one station in Boston plays (at least) play Lionel Richie new/latest song "Good Morning" Not one major Boston station plays that song. Yes, KISS 108 plays "Brandy" and "Ray J" (but not too often) That's the two things Program Management should focus on

Be serious, you are NOT going to get a new CHR to play Lionel Richie. It would be nice to have some CHR competition again though. I miss the old 'ZOU/Kiss days as well as the TIC/Kiss 95.7 days down here in CT.

I think there are two frequency possibilities for CHR in Boston. I'm ruling out 103.3 because I don't think they're going to scrap Oldies 103 anytime soon, especially with all the cuts at WROR lately, Oldies 103 may actually benefit.

If it were Mix 98.5, that would leave the hot AC hole open, which would be a place for 93.7 Mike-FM to slide in. If this were to happen, it would probably also benefit WZLX.

If it were 104.1 WBCN, the obvious winners are WBOS and WFNX, and to some extent WAAF. The market does have a lot of rock stations, but only 2 CHR stations (mainstream and rhythmic) so CBS could be taking this into account. Plus, it sounds like there's a lot of confusion at WBCN these days, both musically and talent-wise.

I think WCRB 99.5 would be a good choice, because I really do think that WCRB it going down the tubes. Is it doing well at all?
