New Top 40 in Corpus?

From allaccess-

A little birdy told ALL ACCESS that a new FM is coming to CORPUS CHRISTI.

Could it be Mainstream Top 40? Hmmmmm ... stay tuned!

107.3? That station seems to flip formats every couple of years... then again so do alot of the others.

My guess would be that the new FM in Corpus Christi has to be 106.9 FM. It's no secret that Claro Communications, LTD (Gerald Benavides) has been actively seeking a buyer for KMZZ. The word on the street is that Restless Communications, the folks over at KBSO who are LMA'ing the station under the moniker 94.7 Badlands FM have already been pushing and selling the "new FM" station on 106.9 here in town to clients. They either worked out an LMA with Gerald Benavides or they are planning to purchase the station from him. Hadden & Assoc. has KMZZ listed for $950K which is ridiculous for that station. With $50K more, you can buy a 50KW FM in Corpus Christi or even a 100KW FM for 1.2 million.

Haven't been to Corpus Christi for a very long time...did KTKY 106.1 Refugio ever complete its move in to the market (move to 106.5 Taft and 50 kw from a tower in Ingleside)?

That's the first one I thought of when I saw this thread. According to FCC data KTKY lost their tower site and was off the air for a considerable length of time. Apparently they've recently been operating with temporary facilities on 106.1 while construction continues at the Ingleside site, using 150 watts from a 40 foot tower in "downtown" Refugio.

No they still haven't constructed 106.5 FM. Last I heard is that they ran into problems with the FAA with the site they wanted to build their new tower on. Their best option after that fell through would have been to work out a deal with Convergent Broadcasting and get onto their antenna through their combiner (which is already set up to accept 106.5 since they installed it when they had the option agreement to acquire KTKY from Pacific Broadcasting but the option became void when Convergent defaulted) but I heard those negotiations didn't work out too good either. So I have no idea what Pacific is going to do to get 106.5 on the air. They are currently looking at a few options right now and they hope to start construction pretty soon but we've been hearing that line for years now! lol

As jd mentioned, they are currently operating with temporary facilities on 106.1 FM in Refugio.

Can Corpus support 2 Top 40 stations?

Yeah most definitely but if the folks over at Restless Communications are smart, they will move their Americana format on 94.7 over to 106.9 and make 94.7 the Top 40 station. That is the only way they are going to have a chance against Z95.

Corpus Christi already has 2 Top 40 stations, Z95 and Planet 102.3.

I don't know...Z95 and 102.3 are nothing alike. Other then the occasion Black Eyed Peas or Lady Gaga, the Planet plays a lot of other songs Z95 doesn't. I would classify 102.3 as more of a Hot AC or maybe even a CHR station.

I wouldn't really call Z a top 40 station, They are more hiphop than top 40.

KZFM is actually a Rhythmic leaning/CHR format

Agreed. I would no way consider Z95 a Hip Hop station either.

No Z-95 is a Hip Hot station with bad DJs. Until they get back to their Top 40/PopDance mainstream roots they will remain at a 6 Share.

At one time Z-95 was #1 Teens, 18-34 and 25-54

Kiss in Dallas and Z-100 in NYC are #1 18-34 and sometimes 25-54

Yes it can still be done but it ain't going to happen with baby djs screaming Yo Yo Yo all day.

Kidd Kraddick is almost 50 and still sounds relevant. Elvis Duran is approaching 45

You let a consultant have too much say so you fail.

I disagree. A Hip Hop station doesn't play dance music.

I laughed at this. But also heavily agree.

Sure it does! It may not be trance or house or freestyle but some hip hop is dance in its own way. Certainty lots of sampling of dance trax in hip hop songs
