NEW TOPIC! .... And it's about STAR!

I must admit I am impressed with the direction Star 94 is headed in! WOW!
Not that I'm advocating that everyone should start trying to sound like them now, but I love the direction they are headed in as a Hot AC, and really love current sound that Star 94 is delivering - on Star 94!

B98.5 better watch out! Although, I don't think it will affect them too much because, whether you want to admit it or not, B98.5 does have a "pretty solid playlist". In other words, B98.5 consistently seems to continuously play strong, recognizable hits. It may be somewhat boring, but at the same time, if you know and like the music, it can be pretty hard to "stray away" from them. There've been a few times when I've seen them play a large block of stuff that makes me think "If I was already there listening, I would not have voluntarily changed the channel for at least an hour". I do believe B98.5 can be toppled by a new comer, BUT, they will not be toppled easily or too quickly... |

I don't think any of the pop/top 40, or current music urban stations have much to worry about when it comes to Star, but I do see Star affecting any old school / 90's r&b station to some degree, and eating away any of their listeners who may desire more variety in their "classic 90's hits".

I think that the current Star is a much, much better idea than Groove was. Groove should've just started back as WiLD from the get go, and probably might have even gained a more dedicated following by now. Maybe they wouldn't have been as successful with WBTS in existence, but they surely would've more immediately benefited the moment WBTS flipped - since people would've already had time to acknowledge their presence and know to go there, instead of a bunch of people straying off as WWVA took time to "find themselves" after WBTS flipped.

I'm sure I may have more to say later on, but that's all for now.

I take back what I've said about Star affecting an old school r&b station (if any) that focuses a lot on 90's r&b hits. I just realized that what Star is doing is a 90's weekend - and it's ALL 90's. I overlooked that at first and thought they were playing all that in addition to today's adult hits, all mixed up. NOT sure how I didn't see that at first... BUT the entire format structure still sounds great - for a Hot AC.

They shouldn't really affect any urban stations too much. As a matter of fact, Star is "unique" enough now to draw its own audience without hurting anyone else too much. I don't see B98.5 being too affected by Star, as B98.5 also has their own unique style sound, and both stations offer an (almost completely) different sound.

It looks like most of their new listeners either came from Dave-FM or B98.5 (since both went down about as much as Star went up) - they also have a "teaser" trying to entice listeners from Q100, but I think that's only been in the last week or so (since they added Dynamite and Only Girl In The World)

Still not sure whether he's gonna go the Fuel direction (competing with Dave) or the Rihanna direction (competing with Q100)...maybe he can do both...

And how does this affect Q100?

They think it does (since they have teasers comparing their music to the music on Q100)

Star has pretty solid 18-34 numbers, so they definitely overlap audience with Q100 anyway
