New Topic... The life of an engineer.

Part 1

My buddy the Deeman asks Ill answer..
Im laughing. bringing up my depressed spirits..

First The year is having a rough start. I had kidney stones. My 13 yearold had a seizure. and my other half had a TIA Stroke.
reminds me glad to Hear that Big Jay is felling better.

Now. This past summer I spent the weekends building the New WIBG am/Fm studio facilities.
working the day job, and building a New house in the evenings. for those that dont know I had a house fire in Jan 2007
and Fighting the insurance and mortgage company to release funds to rebuild. The saga is still not over.
I sure have nothing to hide.
The WIBG buildout was lots of work but fun.
We started by re-arainging the AM studo space. to make space for the FM. Then Built new New Walls Inuslated and sheet-rocked
to isolate the 2 studios. I hand built the Custom Deck for the FM studios Identical to what I built for WWTR.
I should build a website with the Photos.
At this point WIBG was still transmitting from the Avalon site. with an old QEI 3.5 kw transmitter and garbage audio chain in a building with No Air.Hot... you could bake Cake in the room.
I started to look for a new transmiiter for the Upgrade and move under the CP.
During the studio Build we had Ordered 2 New antenna systems one for WIBG-FM and One for WYGG which also got a power increase
thats another story. I had looked into several antenna companies Ended up using PSI to Build Both antennas.
I also Found a BE FM-10A transmitter that sat in storage for a few years after It was taken out of service to be replaced with an IBOC noise maker. This transmitter looked like it just came out of the factory. This was the start of the New transmitter Plant for WIBG's Power upgrade.. part 2 will follow If interested..

At Present I am still in the Process of the WNSW/WPAT transmitter Diplex buildout. WHWH/WTTM Studio Buildout.
New Transmitter plant for WTTM.,and replacing a Tower at the WHWH site.
Finished the WYGG Power increase Buildout.
Just wish we could post Photos here..

Re: New Topic... The life of an engineer.

Having worked in this industry for 42 years, I've met and worked with some of the finest engineers
at many radio stations in NYC, Philly and New Jersey. From Art Silver to Dick Swetits, Neal Newman is truly
one of a kind, and never to be repeated. Neil is not only a great friend, but I've never experienced
the accuracy, the speed and the rock solid devotion to the industry and improving it. For WIBG-FM, Neil
lead the charge every step of the way to relocate a radio station 10 miles from its original location, rebuilt
the facility, created new FM studios at our AM headquarters, and did it all in record time! He worked in close
concert with Ted Schober, a consummate radio engineer, and truly a huge part of the WIBBAGE landscape.

Neal and Ted are the engineers who know AM/FM, from mike to antenna, and everywhere in between . Their
unique experience and firsthand knowledge provided the leadership and direction that made the complete
makeover of WIBBAGE FM @ 94.3 happen in record time!. Neal and Ted knew where to find the proper equipment,
including a unique multistream intranet based STL that revolutionized the audio quality of both WIBG1020
and WIBBAGE FM. And to work with Neal in the installation of a 10kW BE transmitter, to formalizing WIBBAGE
FM's Master Control suite. They are nothing short of miracle workers. For CEO's who read this blog, I could not
provide a stronger endorsement. And they accomplished all of this night and weekends while still holding a
major position with a large corporate broadcast group! These guys never quit. Its not in their vocabulary.
A public thanks to Neal and Ted for a job done exceedingly well. He literally recreated a radio station out of dust.
and formed it into an incredible jewel! Words simply can't describe our thankfulness to both of them.

The heavy lift FM engineering requirements and filings were the stunning work of Ted Schober, who shepherded
the process through the Commission, and his outstanding leadership of contours and his incredible knowledgebase
provided the leadership that we absolutely needed. Ted knows the players in DC and has been like a brother
in every sense of the word. These boards seem to be filled with so much negativism and Monday morning quarterbacking,
but its time to step up and honor those giants of the broadcast industry who are "quiet giants", but that
don't boast of their accomplishments, yet keep New Jersey radio moving ahead. My heartfelt and sincere thanks
to Neal and Ted for being with us every step of the way. By the way, both likewise are an integral part of the
programming and marketing of the AM/FM.

Many corporate CEO's are likewise amazed at how these two individuals accomplished so much in such a short time,
less than 4 months! Absolutely amazing.

Re: New Topic... The life of an engineer.

Great new topic Neil.. Don't you have that Angel fire website to post pictures? You forgot to mention that an engineer is also the stations janitor too...LOL. Feel better Neil. Remember the night when I bought the Adrianne to WTTM when you were on 1680 from the WHWH site. You me and Brian rode around in my old station wagon and could'nt believe the bass and loudness it had with the optimod. You were turning the power up and down from 10K to 1K. The worst thing you ever did was to move that to Philly it has no signal at all now. I know Arthur Lieu wanted the signal in Philly but other then that it goes no where at night on that shunt fed antenna. Long live radio Ted in your basement.

Re: New Topic... The life of an engineer.

Hey Neal,
What did you build for WWTR? Was it in the trailer or somewhere else. Is anyone broadcasting from there, or is it all T-1 from another studio?
Its been more than 4 years since I was in that trailer. Its where I got my start in radio (outside of college).
Funny - for years, we used to adjust our program clocks so we wouldn't have an open mike as the train passed by.
Friday night I was on the train and saw the reverse - I actually saw the trailer from the train as we headed toward Penn Station.

Re: New Topic... The life of an engineer.

Hey Neal!

You must be the busiest man in radio. Sorry to hear you've had to deal with so many personal issues. Clearly, we weren't promised an easy time in THIS life. My thoughts are with you.

Thanks for the splendid pics. That BE box for WIBBAGE-FM looks factory fresh. I assume you retained the QEI as a back-up. Hopefully not too bad damaged by the vandals...perhaps nothing a lil paint wouln't fix.

Pete
