New translator on in MGM.

96.5 relaying WVAS-HD2 "Bama State Radio" This was the one-day home of am740.

So what type of programming is on Bama State Radio? Something Urban I presume?

So is R&B not available on a commercial station in Montgomery? College stations usually do NPR or some type of programming not commercially available in the market.

Is WVAS just a placeholder or have they acquired the 96.5 translator?

Is 720 giving up or do they have a new translator lined up? I'm beginning to see the end of the line for low ground conductivity South-Eastern AM stations without FM translators.

WVAS has always targeted the black population of the city with their programming. NPR type stuff is available on Troy State Radio from Troy and Alabama Public Radio from Selma. Both put good signals into the city and TSR also carries classical and BBC programming on the HD subchannels.

Yeah, I'm familiar with WVAS but it's been a decade since I heard the station. Based on the info from RDP's link I'm gathering that the translator is carrying a student run Bama State station while the big signal is carrying a professional college urban variety format.
I was confused because I thought WVAS' main signal was student run and programmed and had no idea they even had HD-2 and HD-3 signals.
