New TV station in Charleston (WLCN)

On Friday, June 12, Charleston is getting a brand new TV station. It is based out of Summerville, and is on digital channel 18. The station is WLCN, and it will be all HD, with a local backing from Nick Salvucci, former news anchor and producer at WCIV being the news director, and Dr. Lucas Fry will be the president of the station.

The station will have lots of local content every day, with 4 1/2 hours of local news a day. They will have a 6-9am morning show, a noon newscast, news at 7:30pm, and a 10pm news.

With their three sub-channels, they will have mostly local content on 18.1, a weather channel on 18.2, and the Retro Television Network (RTN), with many classic TV shows, on 18.3.

At the start, about 525,000 viewers will be able to get the station, as they already have contracts with Knology and Home Telephone (Moncks Corner) cable systems, and are looking for deals with others.

Here is an article about the station from the Post and Courier.

I didn't know about the subchannels--I guess I will have to unhook the cable and connect the digital antenna to check them out.

The Elloree/Santee area is a good ways from Charleston but I will play with their digital signal when they come on Friday to see how they look in our area from ground level and off our 200 foot tower, should be fun.

Well....a few things: 1) I've only seen an extremely small number of Television stations operated successfully by ministries. I HAVE seen some poorly-programmed ones though. Think: Pat Robertson's old Family Channel.

2) this quote scares me: "We've got a good team of people, a lot of good Christians," he said.

3) Where is the upstart money coming from? Are they "good Christians?" and...have they really crunched the numbers? I don't know how they're going to make it, especially in this economy.

This will be interesting.

That station also is carrying a show featuring Summerville football coach John McKissick, and could carry many of their games, as well. They are very ambitious, but the staff they have is just average.

Their news anchor is Ney'Ama Duncan, who used to do traffic on a few stations in town, and happens to be a member of the church that the station is owned by. Jody Only also will anchor, as she was a producer at WCIV.

the only problem since signing on is that some shows & commercials have no sound.

i unhooked the cable to check out the subchannels and didn't get a signal for 18.1, 18.2 and 18.3
