New TV Station in Hattiesburg

It's WHPM-LD, a low power digital station. They appear to have 8.4 kW from RF channel 23 as licensed, but a construction permit to go back to analog at channel 30 with just 440 watts. I imagine they'll let that one expire. ;)

I knew it couldn't have been a full power station since there's already one on channel 23 out of Mobile, WDPM, whose contour reaches all the way into Mississippi when it's actually on the air (which it hasn't been in ages.)

Who previously served as Hattiesburg's Fox affiliate, WXXV?

Yes. WXXV has been the Fox affiliate, and in the analog days, delivered a decent signal to the Hub City. WLOX is similarly-situated for ABC. In the deep, dark past, WLOX operated a translator in Laurel on channel 9.

There has been a bit of a gold rush, of late, for small LDs with network affilliation. Greenwood, for instance, has an NBC affiliate like that. In my area, Jackson, TN and Jonesboro, AR are getting similar stations (they may be on now; I don't know).

Without carriage on cable -- LPs don't get must-carry -- one wonders what the business plan is.

DE

The station that used to be on channel 51 in Jackson,MS has moved to channel 23. Its supposed to be a full power station but is temporay broadcasting from the K-Love tower also owned by Flinn. I can somtimes pick it up. Its mostly the "worship" network. they were taping at the state fair talent show so they must be trying to add some local content. No word on whether it will go full power. It originally had a cp to got 1 million watts, but the last I checked, the FCC doesn't have it listed on its site. BTW. WXMS 27 is now simulcastiong on 40.2 WDBD. "Me TV" curiously many times analog 27 is airing local commercials but 40.2 is not. The late night programming on WXMS 27 is also local and 40.2 is national.

You can add Dothan, AL to that list. They're getting (or have gotten) an NBC LD affiliate as Greenwood did. No word on if it's going to be carried on cable.

At least in Greenwood they have the power of Commonwealth Broadcasting behind them. They probably cut a deal to get the NBC on to compliment their own Fox and ABC feeds.
