New Urban Station In Joplin, MO

From Radio & Records.com

Joplin's New Urban
Oct. 04, 2006
By Dana Hall

Hardman Broadcasting has flipped sports WMBH/Joplin, Mo., to urban as "WMBH, AM 1560, Hip-Hop & R&B Hits." Owner/GM James Hardman will also handle the PD/MD duties.

The station is in need of service and asks that product be sent to the corporate office: C/O Hardman Broadcasting, 4011 S. 92nd East Ave., Tulsa, OK 74145.

They also have a website, it's not up to par yet but it's www.1560thebeat.com

wow an AM urban station it must be the 60's again...wow who the hell would listen to that shit...besides me

I know what you mean. Seems a little strange to be doing urban on AM in Joplin. However, you have to give them credit for trying something different. They could have kept that syndicated sports on, run more syndicated talk and/or brokered the station out to rent-a-preachers!

understood but the last time you had "black" music breaking through on AM was when the demand for "Urban" music hit waaay back when. For those who want quality sound well i guess they will be out of luck because their fav songs will sound just as good as ESPN radio does. this is the south too..people want that treble :p

While I agree that urban is best done on FM, you also have to ask the question of whether you'd want to listen to your favorite music on AM or just not have it at all. Those are really your only options if you like urban in Joplin. My experience has been that music on AM works when the audience is either unserved or grossly underserved. With a good engineer, you can have decent sound quality on an AM. No, it won't be as good as FM, but it can be good enough that people would enjoy listening and would want to come back.

Only option...except for Ipods, MP3 players, CDs and satellite radio. Start thinking you can survive because nobody else is doing it is not a smart strategy!

Well, yes and no. Taking your case to an extreme would logically mean radio shouldn't be around anywhere because CD's should have put it out of business 20 years ago! I would certainly agree that being an urban-oriented iPod or CD player with cracks and hiss as well as commercials isn't the best option for 1560. However, if they really make an effort to serve the African-American community in Joplin, they're something more. Satellite and the iPod can't do that.

Also, keep in mind that roughly the same percentage of people listen to radio today as 30 years ago, and it's greater than 90%. Yes, new listening options have cut into TSL, but you're still going to reach the most people with good ol' fashioned radio!

The stations website no longer works.. what's up with it??
