The USFL needs to dump the “hub” concept and place its teams in their supposed home markets. Otherwise it’s just a bunch of generic teams competing, much like its lineal predecessor, The Spring League. There currently is no fan interest outside of the Birmingham Stallions.
Here in Houston the new version of the Gamblers don’t even register a blip, despite the original Gamblers (1984-85) being fondly remembered. However the XFL (2.0) Houston Roughnecks, who actually played their home games here in 2020, had good crowds and quite a bit of local media attention.
The Roughnecks are apparently returning next year as part of XFL 3.0. If they play their home games here while the Gamblers are confined to some distant hub city, guess where the fan interest is going to be.
One of the big problems with spring football these days is that NFL doesn't seem to have a offseason anymore. Compared to the 80s, the NFL draft/free agency/mini-camps get so much attention on radio and ESPN that most football fans seem to be sated.
When looking through the Channel Guide earlier today, I noted that today is the USFL season opener. Anyone give a rat's behind? How long you give this league before it folds?
