New Vashon based streaming radio

HI, a friend who handles several AM sites on Vashon suggested it would be OK to post a pointer here.

I've just recently gotten all the development wrapped up and turned on all the needed licenses. Right now
it's purely an experiment in what radio might morph into given the possibilities of Internet technologies.
If you want to have a look and comment on UI/UX (User Interface/Experience), it's at radiovashon.com
A modern Chrome, Firefox, or Safari should be fine (it's all web based).

(No ads or subscriptions, so I hope you won't count this as spam!)

Thanks,
Andy Valencia

Beyond being in the wrong room, which the administrators may or may not move your post; how are you prepared to pay the ridiculous Sound Exchange and other music licensing fees for a streaming music operation? It was announced those fees were going up 44% recently.

Why the wrong room? Last time I checked Vashon was in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Just because there's no stick doesn't mean it isn't relevant.

Certainly any questions of streaming costs belong over in the other room. I'll post something there in the coming week; sorry for the bother.

"I'm sorry; I thought this was "Abuse"." :)

Well, it's been 24 hours and this thread is still active in "Seattle-Tacoma". Given the increasing use of those detestable smart-speakers, what does it matter whether a stream is being simulcast on a local terrestrial broadcast or whether it's an on-line only stream that has a local focus? Like it or not (and I don't) they're increasingly the same thing.

I know Andy, had coffee with him this morning. I think it's very impressive that he wrote all the code for this station. He's not using Icecast or off the shelf software. Every thing was hand coded by Andy. The server he is using is hosted with Linode.com running his custom software under linux. In his first post he does mention the evolution of radio on to the internet. Helping out Voice of Vashon peaked his interest in this project. He is interested in the usability of what he wrote as well as the music rotation which he again wrote that code too. Very Very talented coder and network skills. kinda interesting seeing a top level coder take on a project that tackles music streaming/rotation/weighing.

The music royalty issue he is very well versed and would make a good person to have in your corner to take on the music industry. He has first hand knowledge on what it takes from end to end.
If your webserver crashes no better person to have pick up the pieces and help you get back on line.

Someone on Vashon Island isn't really in a position to "take on the music industry." All one can do is fill out the paperwork, and pay the required fees.

And that's what he does for Voice of Vashon, A good person to have.

What I really meant by "take on the music industry" is he knows how to help a station keep compliant with reporting. Voice of Vashon needed a solution for reporting what was played during some live shows. He wrote what VoV (Voice of Vashon) call our "Now Playing" software so that talent could manually enter in the information for reporting. When in automation it passes the meta data from Automation. then the info is pushed out to RDS, website now playing, pushes meta data for webstream and logs it locally. The best part it runs on a Raspberry Pi3b. He actually helps generate VoV reports for BMI and Sound exchange.

Don't misinterpret my question as being critical of him starting a stream. It's great that he's taking on writing so much code from scratch, and that they're able to create reports of what music is played to Sound Exchange and all. The harsh reality remains; royalty and licensing fees for streaming music have become a back-breaker for much larger streaming companies and even radio groups. I was just curious how they are accounting for those costs as a small start-up, considering those costs are about to go up another 44%.
