ALL ACCESS hits paydirt with our story about former CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WIHT (HOT 99.5)/WASHINGTON's MORNING MESS starring MARK KAYE & KRIS GAMBLE into wakeups at COX Top 40 WAPE/JACKSONVILLE (NET NEWS 1/10). WAPE is on the air pimping the new show with a promo:

"For 50 years WAPE95.1 has been known for legendary morning shows ... JAY THOMAS ...THE GREASE MAN ... HOYLE & FIZZ ... and THE MORNING ZOO. On MONDAY, JANUARY 29th WAPE will usher in a new era of JACKSONVILLE morning show history. Find out who's next!" Look for WAPE OM/PD CAT THOMAS to officially say it's MARK KAYE & KRIS GAMBLE soon.

The audacity of using "actual talent" as the basis for a promo on a station that blows as bad as WAPE FM is unthinkable. Also, WAPE AM's success out shined what the fm reincarnation has ever done. Then there's the meltdownsince Cox got their hands on the station. Just great, another radio version of the View.

:( I agree...WAPE-FM can in no way ever be compared to the "BIG APE" "THE MIGHTY 690" and believe me I know!!

So, BIG APE, that means you've actually HEARD The Big Ape sometime during your career, right?

The Big Ape AM is the WAPE....the FM has always been all over the road, along with the cheapest air staff that they could hire! I did work at the Big AM for Sister & Stanley, not only was it fun working there, but it sounded that way on the air also. Great times!!!

??? I think I have my my Radio career perfectly clear including the BIG APE in previous posts and do not need any more questions from you Radio-Guy regarding that. I assume "you" did never hear the BIG APE in the heyday!

I agree. Nothing will ever be what the Mighty 690 was. I was the last Chief Engineer. I'm the guy that turned that magnificent old, home brew, 50KW transmitter off for the last time.

It's a given that, at that time, it was no longer the "Big Ape", but it was the end of an era.

An era I miss.

Listening to that station in the early sixties, when I was a teenager, made we want to get into this business.

It's just too bad that they squeezed out Tony Mann. He was the last of the old school talkers and the last real jock that they had.

I agree. Nothing will ever be what the Mighty 690 was. I was the last Chief Engineer. I'm the guy that turned that magnificent old, home brew, 50KW transmitter off for the last time.

And I pressed the "ON" button for the first time to inaugurate the then new Harris DX-50 transmitter back in '95. One era ended and another began. That was my last contribution to the "Mighty 690" before leaving day-to-day broadcasting. Somwhere in between, a short-lived Continental 317C2 ruled on Route 17.

Let's get together some time and we'll let Dave Hultsman pay for lunch.

Both you 2 guys are great.. I would love to join ya but geography prohibits.. Who owns the land in Orange Park Now?

What's new about this? Rip and read from the Star and mindless banter between a neutered male and a blabby female. Next.
