New WBCN Program Director

The fellow at WZLX will be the new WBCN program director. Mike Thomas

Shared duties in this new world of radio.

His first day at WBCN is Monday, June 23.

i disagree. lets give him a shot and see how he does...

Mike Thomas is probably a nice enough guy, but with consultants and higher ups and all the strings that are attached to the position of Program Director consolidation continues. Programming two stations is a ton of
work, but how much real decision making goes into the P.D. position these days? You can bet on New York
calling the shots with their strategists in place.

Jay Beau Jones supervises Oldies 103.3 and 98.5

Mike Thomas now has Oldies 103 and WZLX

see a pattern? These are not the days when WCOZ would take WBCN head on.

Maybe WBCN should go progressive talk OR just lift the WFNX format.

Mike Thomas now has 104.1 WBCN and WZLX

see a pattern?

yeah progressive talk did AMAZING things in boston (i'm still blown away that it didnt work in, of all places, Boston. geez)

i say any change is good change. i mean, if you'd rather, they could take ClearChannel's route, and have one PD per station, but voicetrack middays, overnights, and nearly every weekend shift...

I really hope they dont do that. Voicetracking is, IMHO, awful for the business.

ActionJax: agreed. which is why im not fully opposed to the two stations per PD strategy. It definitely spreads the PD thin, but it puts a lil more on the plate of the MD beneath him/her, so it ends up working out fairly well.

As for Dan O'Brien, met him a couple times...seems like a really really nice guy. He might of gotten shafted, but again, I don't think it was that unexpected. CBS is kind of gung-ho about PD's splitting duties nowadays. Its unfortunate, but it's true. Look at Mullaney at Mix 98-5. He's been there for years, but Jay Beau got the PD gig...they need players that can cover two stations (a "gold station", such as Classic Rock or Oldies...and a new music station...at the end of the day it ends up hurting the "gold station" more than the new music one.)

I enjoy WZLX, and am sure that this Mike Thomas guy is a good programmer, but Dan O'Brien got shafted.

Like Mike Mullaney, O'Brien is qualified for a PD gig, but these guys are probably better off with the relative stability of their MD positions.

I've been a PD in Boston, and I've been an MD in Boston.

The best job in radio in Boston is MD. Hands down.

you can sleep at night, the perks are amazing and the suits never bother you.

THANK GOD! It is not an outsider coming in from another market who knows how to "fix" 'BCN. The LAST thing 'BCN needs is for some cowboy to come in and screw with the more succesful shows there like T and R, Adam12, and Hardy.

Um..the ZLX PD is an outsider. He was the cowboy hired to come in and screw with WZLX.

Just FYI...

And if memory serves me correctly, Wellington was an outsider cowboy who swung in and replaced Nik and Deek & Melissa for his Hardy in afternoons...

...i mean, if you wanna get technical.
