New WCVB look?

You may not have noticed, but WCVB has been making some subtle changes to their set during the past couple of days. One example, they have removed the BostonChannel.com watermarks around their set, reflecting the new WCVB.com branded Website. They have also replaced some of the lighted backgrounds, located just off the main anchor desk.

What makes these backgrounds interesting is that the graphical pattern is modeled almost exactly off of the new Hearst graphical packages that were rolled out in July to Hearst-owned NBC stations just prior to the Olumpics.

A link to WESH graphics is below.

WCVB's current package is more than 5 years old, so it stands to reason that they are poised for a refresh. Based on the changes to the set, it looks like one is imminent.

I think you probably mean Hearst.

A revolutionary idea considering a Manchester station is an effective satellite of "the Boston channel"... I wonder if this is the handiwork of new PD Betsy Braun.

Ummmmmm..... WMUR is not a satellite of WCVB, "effective" or otherwise.

Looks like WCVB completely overhauled their weather graphics, first time since going HD 5 years ago.

Looks very similar to WJAR in Providence.

WCVB has always been similar to WJAR, even though different affiliation. They were both the first in the market to go HD, and they always shared a lot of the same syndicated shows. Both were home to Oprah until her show went off the air. Now, both are home to Kelly & Michael and Ellen. They DID both have Martha, but that's gone now.

Correction. WLNE was first in the Providence market to go HD.

Somebody has their Dates messed up. I'll check on it. WLNE was not dead last. As soon as they were sold, the new owners wasted no time in switching them over to HD. I remember WJAR still building their HD studio when WLNE was already broadcasting their news in HD. I think WPRI may have actually been last to go HD.

On May 16, 2011, WJAR became the first station in the Providence market to air newscasts in high-definition.[7] A new set was constructed for the transition to HD and debuted on NBC 10 News Sunrise that morning. Photos of the set as it was being built were posted on the station's Facebook page. During construction, newscasts were broadcast from a temporary set in the station's Studio B. Several technological upgrades were also made.[8] Only in-studio video is in HD; the field cameras still shoot in 4:3 SD but the field video is enlarged and cropped to match the aspect ratio of HD television screens.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

In September 2011, as had been promised by Citadel upon its acquisition of the station, WLNE-TV began broadcasting newscasts and syndicated programming in full high-definition. The station additionally debuted a new logo and website design, matching those of other Citadel stations, but incorporating its previous stylized 6.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

WPRI and WNAC are the last stations in the market to upgrade their newscasts to high definition, though they were first to experiment with the format through promotional materials and debates during the election season in 2010. Set reconfiguration started on July 22, 2011. Newscasts in the interim aired from The Rhode Show studio. WJAR was the first in Rhode Island to have made the upgrade, on May 16, 2011, followed by WLNE on September 13, 2011. They debuted the new set and modified graphics on September 20, 2011 during their 5pm newscast.
