New weather network 'WeatherNation' to debut later this year

Hmm, never thought of a potential Weather Channel competitor. If they do it right, stick by their claim and can get into tens of millions of households, it just might work.

This sounds much like the resurrection of Dish Network's short-lived "The Weather Cast."

About 10 years ago there was a weather company that started up in the Atlanta area. I can't recall the name of it but my friend worked for them for about a year. They had aspirations of being a competitor to the Weather Channel but ultimately the company failed and folded. Hopefully these guys will have better luck.

There have been other attempts...problem with that one is that TWC could probably poach the executives (they're headquartered around the Cobb Cloverleaf interchange there IIRC).

ACCUWEATHER but it's not 24/7.
Weatherscan but only Comcast and Surewest get it.
Why would you say no to Comcast to get because I hope they,BHN/TWC and get it.

Comcast now owns The Weather Channel. I doubt they'd air a niche competitor.

If Comcast dropped CNN & FOX News on their cable systems because of their recent acquisition of MSNBC, the DOJ would pile on an anti-trust lawsuit faster than Attorney General Eric Holder can say "Mr. President."

However, not picking up an upstart channel is different - as in there are valid excuses for not picking up such a channel. No customer demand, no bandwidth available, too expensive, etc.

Part of the reason why some of us did not see channels such as TV Land or GSN until a few years after their launch -- after they past their prime.

Cablevision in the NYC area didn't start carrying TV Land until about 2002 or 2003 for some reason, well past the launch of the network.

Yet you don't see them dropping CNN or Fox News, because they own MSNBC.

Wouldn't mind Comcast dropping FOX News.

Also Time Warner Cable didn't have to add FOX News as afterall they own CNN.

A "pre-existing" apples & oranges argument that can't be compared.

With most people having access to weather info on their smartphone and other devices, we'll see how this network does.

Personally, I think the weather plus and other ones on the digital subchannels are not that useful.

Yeah, 24 hour weather. No reality shows, no documentaries, that is until someone comes along and buys them out.

The problem with 24-hour weather is that it doesn't hold viewers long enough, which is why I think the Weather Channel started adding other programming. I think viewers will tune in for 5 minutes, get a gist of the forecast, and then move on.
