New weekend person for KTVK

Talk on a number of other boards says that 3-TV has hired April Warnecke of Medford, OR KTVL to fill the weekend anchor/reporter opening. April was raised in Gilbert and attended U of A.

No formal announcement from KTVK to confirm or set a starting date. (April's bio has been removed from KTVL's website). If it's true then WELCOME HOME APRIL!

Royal Norman introduced April Warnecke, the newest member of the 3-TV Forecasters, last night on the Newsroom. She will take over the weekend weather duties for GMAZ and the evening news shows.

Another person with little weather experience doing the weather??? I guess it doesn't take much to read the weather forecast.

April did a story on the Rural Metro water rescue team training in the Salt River on Friday's Good Evening Arizona. Patti welcomed her to the station and said that April will be doing weekend weather starting next weekend (Aug 6-7).

It's getting bad between Mrs. Cary Pfeffer (Sue) and Mrs. Matt Williams (Erica) trying to act like they really know what is happening on that weather map. And the feedback on MediaLine says April is no weather guru either. Her bio states she occasionally did weather at KTVL but others are reporting that it might have been once or twice, not a regular thing.

It seems strange that KTVK hired April to do weather. The job posting wanted 2-3 years of on air weather experience. 3-TV brought in 3 qualified candidates in their May Sweeps "Weather Wannabe" contest yet did not hire one of them. April's background as an anchor/reporter seems to fit the other current opening for a weekend anchor/reporter better that the weekend weather position.

Yeah, I looked at Medialine and had the same thoughts. Not sure why they didn't go with one of the three from May, who were actually qualified. Maybe KTVK will go with the "Kim Dillon-esque" weekend anchor/weather person alongside Frank. That way, they would save money and April would work all weekend and just one or two other days per week.

Sue has been positively awful doing the weather during her Saturday am live shots. Over on 12, Caribe manages to do the live shots and do a decent (and improving) job of the weather (of course, she actually has a weather background).

You would think in this day of cost cutting that KTVK would hire a replacement for Kim that would do both, anchor and weather. I was surprised when someone who knows April, said she got the weather job, not the anchor job. The weekend anchor/reporter position is still posted on azfamily.com.

By the way, did you catch Erica Williams on Sunday's 5pm show? Blue jeans with a sparkly belt and a blue top that showed her belly every time she pointed to the weather map.

Next weekend we'll see if 3-TV made the right decision.

Darn! I missed it. I was watching the Weather Channel at 4:30pm to see what was going on with the Monsoons and forgot to turn at 5:00pm.

Keeping in mind that everyone in TV knows everyone it is / was not hard to find out some info from people in Medford.
According to other media folks in Medford, April had only graced the green weather-wall a few times while at KTVL. Most of those instances were due to staffing and scheduling issues...and when I say "most" of those times, I'm told her weather experience amounts to more than once but less than five times. Most of April's tenure in Medford was spent as a morning and noon show anchor with some reporting splashed in from time to time. I'm also told April left Medford without having a new job lined up and she was effectively out of the biz until landing the Ch 3 gig...also of interest...her dad has been with the Phx Fire Dept. for 20 plus years.

OK...hiring someone with little or no experience is what KTVK is known for...you all seem shocked that Ch 3 would hire someone so unqualified but if you think about it...this is what Ch 3 does.

Think back over the past few years...think about how many unqualified people at Ch 3 have filled in or performed weather duties from time to time. Ch 3 has made a habit of pulling in any warm body to fill the 3 minutes of air time they pretent is weather.

I hope Ch 3 is happy that they pulled the lowest "May Sweeps" stunt on the planet...on-air auditions with qualified applicants...website voting...making the viewers think they had a say in the next hire...and in the end they hire someone with little experience for a fraction of the salary Ch 3 would have had to pay someone with credentials.

I absolutely agree. This is my first summer in Phoenix. I will NOT watch KTVK during the monsoon season, because of a decidedly unqualified weather team. What on earth would happen when Royal was on vacation. I would rather watch the over the top coverage on Fox 10 -- at least I get an updated radar picture and forecast.

BTW, over on 12, Caribe did a terrible job filling in for Bill Kelly during the monsoon storms this past week. She seemed extremely uncomfortable forecasting these storms and seemingly mimimized the storms. Since I don't want to be out in the monsoons, it would be nice if they could give us accurate information.
