New Weekend Voice at KOMO

Filling in for Art Sanders on the Sat Midday news on KOMO today is someone by the name of Gary Burley. Really nice classic radio voice. Never heard him before.

He's been on all week. Excellent voice, but not very organized-sounding. In some ways, it's like listening to Larry Van Nuys on KNX in L.A. Excellent voice, sounds friendly (Van Nuys has done non-news radio and TV in L.A. for decades), but news demands some conciseness that neither seems to have.
Of course, if Burley is new to doing the all-news thing, he's likely to develop more skill as time goes on.

Did it ever occur to you that perhaps those high-profile folks are under contract? No, I didn't think so. Taco Bell doesn't have people under contract, so how would you know?

Yes, Gary used to go by "Rhett Walker" on some other station in Tenneseee...

He's probably hanging out at Norm Gregory's house up on Capitol Hill....

Oh - speaking of KOMO, their 'TV dept' has got a NEW director for NEWS:

Q: WHO NOW will get the axe?....any guesses? >>> Lewis?...Gortzen?....Schram?...
What makes you think Tellus got the axe? Did the Times article state that? And Kelly, contracts with folks, high profile or not, can be broken. Ever hear of a buyout? BTW, don't be knocking Taco Bell...you might be flippin' soft shells there some day, too.

Big difference between the "buyout" of a contract and a "broken" contract, chief.

Indeed there is and to whom do you refer as breaking a contract............and don't call me chief, chief.

You tell us. You brought up those two scenarios, sport.

I wish someone would tell Nancy Barrick to get it together on the air. She sounds like she's stoned on downers and/or totally distracted. I can't stand to listen when she's on!

Well okay then Rob, maybe they should buy her out of her contract?

And just for Mr. 70's information, I'll take a header off the ship canal bridge before I would work at Taco Bell and sit around in my ample spare time posting innocuous comments about the location of radio promotions roll-o-banners.

I agree Nancy is hard to listen to because she always sounds bored. It's as if we're bothering her, taking her away from a nap. I'd put Manda in that slot and find a woman who has some personality for the mornings. Manda's fine, but a little like dry toast for me.

Manda sounds like a stuffed shirt but at least she sounds like she's paying attention to what the hell's going on around her.

I think Manda and Bill Yeend make a nice team in the morning. The better question is: how much longer will Bill get up at 2AM to do a morning show before he goes back to retirement and full time golfing?

Yeend

...Yeend signed a contract with Fisher last October for 2 more years...

That's the last one for Yeend as he WILL retire after that...

Speaking of voices at KOMO...

Has anyone heard Sue Romero, Brian Calvert, or Matt Pitman on air lately?

Just from listening, it seems like KOMO is short a field reporter or two.

Sue Romero is on maternity leave, Brian Calvert has been promoted to News Director, and Matt Pittman is on the air as much as usual.

KOMO did hire a reporter to fill in for Sue while she is on leave. Despite that, KOMO is still understaffed for an all news operation.

I agree. Two reporters in both drive times is lacking for an all news shop, even if they do pipe in TV reports.
