New winter trends out

Any comments on the latest 12+ trends?

A lot of happenings in the CBS cluster. The good news for the company would be WODS, which is #3 overall. 'ZLX was steady, but the ratings have been ticking downward in the past few books. Interestingly, WAAF is *edited* than WBCN, which is a feat for the impaired 107.3 stick, and perhaps a wake-up call to do something about mornings.

Luckily for WBCN, they weren't the lowest rated CBS station: that honor would go to WBMX, which has seen its shares sink ever since the JACK craze began spreading nationwide (though it doesn't look like any listeners have gone to WMKK). Now, WBMX is in the same territory with WBOS and Easy 99.1, but at least they're still above a *edited*.

WEEI was down into the *edited* as well for the first time in quite some time.

It's interesting how many out of market stations are showing up in these past few books. Stations like WATD, WSRS, and especially WFNQ are taking shares that were previously going to Boston stations. Is the market getting tired of the content available on the big stations?
Edited by Randy on 03/29/06 01:05 PM.

I noticed Hispanics now account for a larger market share than Blacks.
Is this the first time that has occurred?

Kind of a dull winter sports wise.

I would toss WBOQ in the mix also,if You like 50's or 60's music You have a far better shot hearing that kind of music on WATD or WBOQ than WODS or WROR.
Edited by Randy on 03/29/06 01:08 PM.

WEEI Re: New winter trends out

I agree that the Sports scene is a bit off with
the Celtics and the Bruins battling each other for
last place (imagine if they played the same sport)

but isn't that when a station is supposed to show
its mettle? When the automatics like the Sox and
football talk can't carry ya, creative minds are
needed to keep the conversation going.

When a station depends on a sports franchise,
be it a Sox or a Patriots, or a Howard Stern
(or both), they only have themselves to blame.

Also, is Jason Wolfe being spread too thin around
the Entercom Hallways?

it's only a snapshot, not a full picture. most eveyone was down across the board.

hard to tell if changing a morning show or any jock at wbcn would make any kind of difference at this point. the problem is with the music product and music industry overall, not one morning slot. for years stern was able to mask wbcn's or k-rock's problems with their music format. now that he's gone, they're exposed. wbcn's pd can't decide between the old rock and the new rock. wbcn was once a rock music champ. it's not even a contender anymore. just take a listen. of course, wbcn alums here will come back and b*tch-slap me silly, but i'm just being fair.

Re: WEEI Re: New winter trends out

'TKK up a very small notch (first book with Severin). WILD (AM) down slightly
(addition of black talk network shows 1/30)
______________

Re: WEEI Re: New winter trends out

I think that's a bit harsh. Most sports stations in most markets are considered successful if they can get a two share. Not only is WEEI doing *edited* better than that, it's also the number one full time talk station in town, during this down period. My guess is that with WTKK languishing, the free fall of WBCN and the recent slippage of WMJX, they probably are still number one in 25-54 persons through most dayparts. That's not a bad position to be in during their "offseason." Once the Sox regular season starts up, the 12+ number should move back upward and continue on the high end through the fall book and Patriots season. Just like any radio station or format, WEEI has seasonal spikes and low spots. This is the latter. No biggie.

It looks like they grabbed some listeners from WMJX. GM may need to do some tweaking to 106.7. They're beginning to sound a little stale.

WBCN knew this was coming, and with corporate directing them to clear Roth, there wasn't much they could do about it. Rock stations are down nationwide, so WZLX's slippage along with WBCN's drop isn't a big surprise. WAAF had nowhere to go but up, and their core listeners have stuck with them.

Mix...yet another stale radio station. Their whatever weekends are OK, but during the week they're unlistenable. This station needs an overhaul in a big way. This downward trend has been going on for awhile.

Considering Boston annexed parts of Worcester and Southern New Hampshire over the last several years to remain in the top ten (up until last year) it's not surprising that diarykeepers in those areas list stations that are local to them.
