WJJZ will be on the Wyndmoor tower, not in Roxboro. Clear Channel gutted two existing rooms in the main building and combined them into one. Two new analog and two digital transmitters have been installed at the site along with a new backup generator and other related site equipment. It's one of the nicest FM installs I've seen in a long while, with a lot of very innovative details and beautiful craftsmanship.
Not working for CC or WJJZ, I don't know all of the particulars. However, I can say the primary issue was that the mighty Voron on Mermaid Lane needed to have some existing land mobile antennas replaced and repositioned with ones having smaller wind loads, to permit the installation of WJJZ's new turnstyle type antennas. I know, because I own those antennas.
WJJZ will be using separate antennas for their analog and digital signals, plus their pattern must be offset to protect existing stations as part of the short spacing conditions of their CP, so antenna placement on the tower became critical. While all of this was being accomplished, the tower itself was enjoying an upgrade by its new owner, Crown Castle, to the latest standards, which ment an complete structural analysis, removal of dead and abandoned antennas and some reinforcements (remember, this tower has been there for a long while, late 1940's if memory serves me). Contrary to what some have suggested, this lady is in excellent shape for her age, its just that tower standards have evolved over the years and she was due for some work to comply with latest version.
Last week, we reconfigured some of our land mobile transmitter/antenna combinations to permit two of three Bogner type antennas (about a 20 foot high fiberglass antennas, 12 inches in diameter and weighing a substantial amount) to be removed from near the top the tower. This made the room needed for the WJJZ antennas to go up. As I was leaving, the climbers were hoisting the first of the new WJJZ turnstyles into place. We will replace our antennas with new, smaller diameter units in a few weeks when they arrive.
CC's engineer for the project was initially shooting for a Memorial Day power up from the new site. Now, his thoughts were that turn-on would be the first week in June or thereabouts. I haven't heard anything different. However, they are very close. I would think days, not weeks.
While I was touring the new facility, I asked why WJJZ didn't combine with WISX 104.5, already on the tower, into a single antenna system; now a common practice in the industry. The answer was not only did CC want to bring WJJZ on at the new site with both analog and digital using separate antennas, but the pattern requirement attached to the move virtually required the use of different antenna systems for each station.
Hope this helps with the status.
