So......who is it going to be ?

John Cook recently out in Philly

John Sebastian - dear lord - still out

Jay McCarthy - he could maybe bring Tim and Willy to Nashville ;D

Scott Mahalick - Would he want in on taking down the mighty WSIX ?

Will the choice make us all say "Hey Now this is going to get interesting" - "Dear God what are they thinking" - or "That figures" :-\

Nobody, especially the listeners, care who he/she/it will be. Citadel has lost the game. Now they have to stay country to "save face"
--- hence they've been pinned into a corner and they'll flounder as a third rate contender and everybody will shake their head as we
go through musical PD chairs again and again. Fahid should come run this joke, he'll be right at home. And no, they've lost their window
of opportunity to go back to rock, so don't suggest I just want rock back. Waste of electricity.

The thread starter referenced John Cook, whose recent experience in Philly was at WYSP until he was fired for the Kidd Chris racist song incident. Not sure how he would fit in Music City. Does he have any experience programming country? The only reason I could see him fronting 103.3 is if they indeed flipped back to rock - which appears to be what most folks on this board are pining for.

The window of opportunity is indeed gone, and there'll be no change to rock based on market needs. If the country field is crowded here, then the rock field is overcrowded.

No matter where they stand in the country race, they're still a top 10 station in a top 50 market, so there's not an urgent need to change in the near future. They'll keep country for some time to come.

What makes the most sense if Citadel would make a change: Take a clue from what they did in Knoxville several months ago when they moved their talk station to their most powerful frequency there. Move the Zone to 103.3 (which would certainly make the Fan's paltry increase moot), then bring their ABC True Oldies network to 104.5 with a Coyote McCloud morning show.

Not that they would do that, of course, but looking at what Cit's being doing all around the country, it certainly falls in line.

Actually, Citadel moved their talk station to 100.3 FM in 2005 and 98.7 FM became the True Oldies outlet over a year ago, not several months ago.

Seriously, I could see them taking 103 to Oldies to go along with their master plan to save the sinking company.
But does anyone believe that the Oldies format (especially not local) could get BETTER ratings than Country?
I tend to think it would be a wash and they'd have to spend a lot of $$$ re-marketing 103.3. At least they'd
claim to be the #1 Oldies station no matter what. Why not go for a format that could get them some real
substantial ratings? What ever happened to everyone trying to be #1 instead of say "we'll were in the Top 10."
Never mind. I know what happened.

Wasn't COOK PD of KPLX before Cumulus moved into DFW to work some Sebastian magic ? ???

True Oldies is a good format and it does play a lot of songs. How many Country Stations are really needed in Nashville?

ABC's True Oldies Format only has about 40 affiliates right now. That's low compaired to thier other music formats. You ask me how I know? I'm an ABC Music affiliate using Today's Best Hits, and TBH has way more affiliates than The Oldies Channel. The music is TOO OLD.
It would work in the Port Charlotte/Punta Gorda Florida Market where most of the people live there are retired, but go north, forget it! Clear Channel has a format on 104.9, WCVU, called "Seaview 104.9" It consist of oldies that the True Oldies Channel plays, but remember, that market is a retirement community.

Let me add another comment on KDF. I haven't listen to the station in a while, but there was way too much Classic Country on that station. Let the old go away and let the new in. The new country has a rockish sound that could bring KDF back to it's rock heritage in the long run.

County and CHR, are pulling together with a new sound. George Jones needs to stop running to the stations and consultant groups about his music. The last hit he had that I was aware of about 2001 was good, but not airplayable for AC stations. His sound is out of touch with today's youth, especially females.

WSIX as far as hit country sounds good, The Wolf sounds to red-neck to me.

I don't see how playing "rockin' country" (and hasn't that been done here before?) could bring back a "rock" heritage for KDF. Those days are gone. We need to leave them in the past.

As for George Jones, I suppose I could agree with that, but country music doesn't put their stars of a bygone era "out to pasture" quite the same way that rock/CHR stations do. Of course, their fans are teenagers, and not old enough to remember the "classic" guys.

George Jones must still have some pull. They are still using him to advertise Hunter's Automotive. That one has me scratching my head, but it must work, otherwise, they would have pulled those ads by now.

Firepoint, that confused me, too,

'til I read the fine print: "George Jones, the king of country music" (I always thought that was Gov. Acuff) "and Hunter's the king of chrome."

And I saw that commercial again this morning, too! ::)

By the way, I think this is the first time anyone has ever referenced me in the subject line! ;D

KDF will stay country. For most of these big conglomerates like Citadel they just want to be able to say to their corporate clients....hey we got a country station in Nashville. KDF still has a crackerjack sales department that sells it even if it doesn't have ratings. Plus the Titans are an easy revenue maker.

The new program director will be some unknown who will stay that way when he or she leaves in a year.

Breaking News - Alex Rodriguez has taken the PD position at WKDF. ;D

From All Access about Billy Harper quitting.

"As for WKDF, OM/PD LARRY STONE will take over music after he returns from vacation on MONDAY, JULY 21st. All music related questions and issues should be sent to him via e-mail at [email protected]. No word yet on who will take over the now vacant night spot, stay tuned for more details."

Doesn't say interim PD.

And so are we content with what we have in Afternoons ?
