I faintly heard it in a few spots where I live in Somerville ONLY if I drive to a high south-facing hill that blocks WGIR-FM to the north.

Yes I went Rt 1 to Rt 60 to 1-A through Lynnfield, Saugus and Revere and found WGIR-FM overpowering the translator's signal though on occassion you could hear brief bits of the latter.
I noticed my own WMWM coming in ok
in those areas, and better as I got into
Lynn, etc. I saw a site somewhere which said WMWM had been picked up in Rockland south of Boston..maybe Hull etc across the water

Also was getting something weird on 640---after a 50s type pop tune, a woman speaking in Spanish with mystical musical backing. Pirate somewhere?
On FB people were asking if they could get the WMEX translator in their area, maybe expecting the signal to be a full powered FM

What time of day? If near sunset it could be the Cuban station on "Sunset Skip"*, a known phenomenon taking place up to two hours ahead of actual sunset.

* Not to be confused with the TV show from the early 60's starring Ed Byrnes and Efram Zymbalist, Jr.

Last night after 11 pm

"WMEX, and now WMEX-FM"--Larry Justice just now
Actually W266DQ .. if you can get it.
The WMEX in Rochester NH is WMEX-LP..
The WMEX calls appearing on a regular FM station were used up around Lake Champlain, and Martha's Vineyard.

77, Sunset Strip (above)

That would have been "77 Sunset Skip," a phenomenon that used to affect 770, not 640. WABC complained and put an end to it.
