New WPRI Reporters

First off, living in Southeast Mass, I know Erica Ricci from Comcast News 9, and I swore I once saw her on an entertainment-type show on CN8. It looks like that night she was on WLNE was a one-time stint because I haven't seen her since, though I did see John Rupolo for the first time in a long while.

Now getting to my subject, there's been an outpour of new faces on WPRI this week. We got Erin Kennedy, who's been anchoring both tonight and last night, and Terrie Davis. I might have seen a new male reporter too, maybe not. Either ways, are these interns or have they arrived from other markets?

Interns do not typically go on the air in mid-sized markets

> are these interns

Unless you are market 100+, Interns do not make the air.
(The Intern would have to be VERY good looking and very good at what she does, and even then its extremley rare).

Most people will not make face time, especially at a station the size of WPRI or WJAR without some sort of deal/contract signed. Thats just the nature of the beast.
There is a lot of non-intern talent and a decent sized talent pool to choose from.
However with that said, the entire Providence market is nothing more than a "rung in the ladder" for most reporters and anchors. Not all, but quite a few.
Of course the top of the heap is a top 10 market or network. Maybe a top 20 market depending on the talent level...

umm... something tells me, TX, that there was some sarcasm in that intern comment. lol

Re: Interns do not typically go on the air in mid-sized markets

One word: Temps!

They may have been temporary hires for the Holiday week to give many of the "regular" news team the week off. Many "regular" newspeople, especially "prime" (read: weeknights 6 and 11 P.M. at an ABC/CBS/NBC station and weeknights 10 P.M. at a Fox/UPN/WB station) news/weather/sports anchors have it written into their contracts that they get a week or two off around Christmas.

I would think that the week of July 4th is the other time of the year you see "temps" on local TV newscasts, since many local TV news people are off (and again, many "prime" news/sports/weather anchors have it written into their contracts that they get a week or two off around July 4th as well).

It was a hidden jab at over #100 markets =)

Re: Interns do not typically go on the air in mid-sized markets

Ethan: the two new arrivals to WPRI are NOT interns, nor have they ever been interns at the station. I fail to understand why you even asked if they were interns. You seem to come up with the craziest situations, comments, and questions. I just nod my head and roll my eyes at some of the things you come up with. What station in their right mind would put interns on the air anyway, especially in a market size like Providence?

Anyway, Erin Kennedy joined WPRI a couple of weeks ago. She is the station's new weekend anchor...and will report during the week. She last worked for a station in Lubbock, Texas. She is no stranger to the area. I believe she is either from here originally, has family here, or both.

Kerry Davis (not Terrie) got on board this past week. She is another new face to the station. You will find her doing general assignment reporting. Kerry comes to the station from North Dakota.

I'm glad to hear that you are watching other stations besides WLNE. It's refreshing to see you discussing other stations in the market. Keep it up.

Re: Interns do not go on the air!!!

Regardless of market size, this would NEVER happen in a union shop - that's for sure! The idea that the "star" does not show up, and they put some eager young kid on the air -- NOT IN REAL LIFE! Maybe in the movies it happens that way...

Possibly, a junior reporter would be tapped in an emergency situation - never an intern...
