New WSJS Morning Show

So what's the thought after a week of Brian Freeman and "The Triad's First News?"

With the departure of Glenn Scott, some program changes, in addition to being
under new ownership, many listeners in the triad are not pleased, but with the
"adjustments" being made, WSJS will gain some new audience, especially since
"Sean Hannity" has been added, and a "local" morning talk show is now on.

Some things to consider:

1) The core WSJS listener has nowhere to go! They do not like change, but they will ultimately accept it. The older demos will remain loyal and will learn to like Brian. Brian will loosen up a bit over time and has the potential for being the next Glenn.

2) There will be some adjustment to the changes as the station experiences audience reaction. IMHO, some of the changes were simply for the sake of change.

3) Hannity will help the overall numbers.

4) The Triad Live and Local will do well as long as they make programming decisions rather than sales ones. JR can handle it.

5) Glenn was certainly an important part of the foundation of WSJS, but his retirement will NOT spell the end for the station. His presence will continue with commercials for some of the station's largest advertisers and his fans will understand that he left on his own terms. There are others who will not discover he is gone until months from now.

6) Most important thing is for everyone - ownership, management, and staff - to understand there is a heritage to protect while updateing the station.

:D It's interesting, Mike, that Lexington's WLXN 1440, has been running ads in the local newspaper for about a week that promotes..BOB MAHONEY and the "WAKE UP CREW" Hmmmm Where have I heard that before.. Perhaps SJS will give them that relic jingle of "Glen Scott and the Waking Crew" and they can do a quick splice job! Hahaha! ::)

Of course it is smart for LXN to run some ads. Problem is they have signal issues in most of the areas of WSJS's strength.

So what's the thought after a week of Brian Freeman and "The Triad's First News?"

I took a long listen to the show yesterday. My observations were....

1) The "pace" of the show is much faster than in the Glenn Scott days.
2) Everyone on the show seems to be watching the clock, packing as much content into as little time as possible, and not really communicating with the listeners.
3) Brian Freeman does not know Winston-Salem beyond the statistical analysis.
4) Interaction between Brian and Jeffrey Griffin is very different on-air than it was between Glenn and Jeffrey...It didn't flow seemlessly into his sports report.

As a personal preference, I do not need my pace "picked up" in the morning. I want a "friend" talking to me, reassuring me that the world I left when I went to bed the night before is still there while I'm commuting back into it, of if it is not still there, to tell me how and why it changed.

After listening to the "new" WSJS morning show for 45 minutes, I bumped up the dial to 1230 to see what Max Meeks was doing, and listened 'til it faded out. In the comparison, Max does a WAAAAY better job of communicating with this nearly-50 year old person than Brian is doing.

...but Brian is young in the market. He will learn....

Later....
