Axe…I’m guessing it was KXOR you speak of while you were down at ‘Harvard on the Bayou’ and probably learned somethings as a naïve college student. So, he was getting people to work for free back then too. Let me shed some light on my comments and facts about Michael.
He’s got WTIX-FM to live out his fantasy of working on TIX because Bob Mitchell would never hire him in the late 60’s and early 70’s. I’ve worked for both and Bob wins hands down when it comes to programming. It’s not even a contest. I work for Michael a couple of years ago after Entercom cut me loose. Bob Walker got us together and everything I’ve ever heard of from the past came was true. He continuously ran on about how WTIX was shaped after WABC. Maybe in his mind but in reality, the only thing in common was the ‘chime’ back in the 60’s. It was played off the Mackenzie unit in the back of the studio on Carondelet. Walker personally destroyed the ‘chime’ tape when it was being phased out. Everyday Michael was at the station, all he talked about was WABC in their heyday and how TIX was molded after them. Got old quick when you knew he didn't know what he was talking about. Then, monthly, you had to come in and chase him around for a pay check. He had me work for Walker for two weeks when he was on vacation and didn’t pay me for it. Saying “he thought I’d like to be on in afternoon drive”, like I hadn’t been before. When I left 2 years ago, he was paying T-Ben the equivalent of five bucks an hour and thought that was fair. Nice guy.
He’s not programming genius. Back in the mid 70’s when Joseph had WABB-FM in Mobile with Gary Mitchell; he sunk that station quicker than the British did the Bismarck. And I heard some stories about KXOR as well. Today, if he’s so well liked and a pleasure to work for, why can’t he get a sales staff to stay, have a full time engineer or live jocks? If he is so knowledgeable, why is he not raking in the cash? He’s still running mostly 8 network spots an hour, that’s it. He had the oldies market to himself for 3 years and couldn’t do anything with it. At least Citadel has local advertisers with Scott Shannon. And in a world of iPods and mp3 players with the ease of downloading music people want, why would one attempt to sell a CD with music which is already available? He’s trying to rewrite the history of WTIX to include himself and I’m sure with a picture of himself in the artwork somewhere.
There are tons of other things I could run by you that would make your skin crawl, but that’s for another day. Sorry you asked now aren’t ya.
