New Years Eve - Majik 13 returns on 1560 WMRO

Well Tibbs and Gang,

It's been 29 years ago since Bill & Chris were given orders from WMAK-AM Management to kill my all time favorite "DISCO" station, Majik 13. I am going on the air on Magic 1560, WMRO at Midnight, New Years Eve, live and local, and bring back Majik 13 from Nashville's Radio Past.

Yep, I know some will hate it and some will like it, and yes it is a stupid idea, but I'm going to play the disco hits of 1978-79, some of my favorite dance music. In addition, I'll play what I thought was the very first disco song ever of the early 70's. Oh for Tibbs, I'll play "Born to be Alive".

No automation, all live and local, Majik 13 will rise from the grave over Magic 1560.

My wife has to be up at 5 AM New Years Day Morning to be at work, so I decided to do this instead of watching Dick Clark's NYC ball drop for another year. I've seen that for too many years now, and it's the same ole same ole for me.

I wish all of you a very, Merry Christmas and I hope all of you have a Happy Holiday.

I will be hanging out at the Ryman with Del McCoury, but I will still try to listen.

By the way, Ryan Secrest seems to have taken over that gig from Dick Clark, who apparently inherited it himself from Guy Lombardo! 8)

Well, no I don't broadcast on line because I hate (and scared) of those RIAA people! It will just cover Gallatin, but next year in "2010", I've got to put it on line. Right now, this is just a test to see if I can really do a "Disco Format". Back in the day, for me it was Kool and the Gang, Chic, Prince, The Bee Gees, Funkadelic, Andy Gibb (of the Bee Gees Fame), The Whispers, The Gap Band. I heard all that on Majik 13. I'll play some songs into the 80's that WMAK didn't play due to it was released after the format change to Oldies, but I recall hearing them on Kicks 104 and Y-107 & I played them doing the D.J. gigs at the parties I did for cash.

Do you remember the "Atomic Dog" from the 80's? My sister and I wore that song out! I think George Clinton did that one, and Jungle Love from Morris Day & The Time. The 80's had some hot, good, dance music! Speaking of Dick Clark, I watched a video a while back of Madonna when she was on American Bandstand back in the 80's, and she sat in the crowd with Dick Clark as he interviewed her. Her songs were great then, the stuff she does now is boring, IMHO.

Sometimes the music got too "R & B" on Majik 13, for example, they would play, Move Your Boogie Body from the Bar-Kays. I really didn't like that song. I'd rather hear "Soul Finger" by the Bar-Kays, which was a hot song in the 60's for them. Chris Romer probably recalls the Bar-Kays on WMAK. I guess the Bar-kays stuff from the 70's was o.k., but to me, their music was not songs one could really dance to.

and I'll have to make it out of the royalty of the elite areas of Nashville CITY parts and venture into Gallatin for tunes...

Nock...NO chance of getting near them sticks towards that Gladeville-area. I've suggested
Denny J do a jazz version of "Love Shack." He wasn't to impressed. I'll try some of these
disco songs and see if we can get a musical hook up! You need to suggest a few as well.
Look what Boz Scaggs did in the day. Could be THE big comeback...
 
From an inside perspective, it was truly not a pleasant time in the radio station during the “Majik13“ era, a period that is best left in the past.

One funny story though; my old friend Lt. Kerry Newman (R.I.P.) who was the traffic reporter for WMAK and 92Q also the head of the Metro Police Department Aviation division, was always mixing up the AM and FM call signs closing out his traffic reports, he pronounced magic-thirteen as “majict-thirteen” sometimes. Kerry would occasionally stutter when he got confused and this is all very understandable having to watch for traffic, give reports, fly the plane, listen to three radios and watching out for other aircraft. One morning while driving into work, I heard him close a report with a stuttering pronunciation of “ninety-two-- UUmm-mm-mm-majikt-ttt-thirteen”. I remember it well because I was laughing so hard, I damn near ran into the back of a Metro police car on 8th Avenue.

years of therapy can't help erase memories of 810 Division from August 1978 thru December 31, 1979:
I used to enjoy re-tuning the Dymek air monitor when Roshon was on the air...until he let the s-bomb fly.
 
It all would have been water under the bridge if Arbor Mist were on the scene back then! But, I have to
ask one question...and this will be a bad attempt at a bad joke...how did Roshon know Scott and
why would he scream his name on the air? hehehe.

Seriously, was it Jan 1, 1980 (how hard is it to type that date???) when 92Q joined in with WMAK for
McCoy in the Morning s-cast? "The Q & MAK" I can't remember how all that worked. Geez.

I remember Steve & MGL, Skinny Bobby Cook, Doc Damon, Scooter Davis, etc. Anyone know where
Scooter is? Who did 6-12/- and over nights? Funny how a small, single owner could manage to pay all
those people to work, have a terrific energy and sound and probably make a buck before screwing it
all up.
 
IIRC, Doc was the PD when it flipped to oldies. Romer can correct me on all that if I am wrong, but the oldies was run out of the automation system named "SAMMY", a Schafer 903 who was rather tempestious around static electricity. I last spoke with Scooter he was working at WBVR up in Russellville about 13 years back. Roshon Vance, "Oh man!"now there was a piece of work.
On the other matter, as bad as it was then, its a whole different world now. George was pretty good to work for compared to this day and time.

you are correct sir, Doc was PD when Majik died: he put the original lists of oldies together, and I dubbed the reels for weeks.
Scooter is still doing well doing mornings at 96.7 WBVR in Bowling Green (which can be heard here).
Last I heard of Roshon had him in Albany, GA. When he was at WMAK, he didn't drive...took a cab to work everyday from
out on Murfreesboro Rd @ I-24. Original Majik PD Barry Mayo is currently running what's left of Radio One: he went to Chicago
after leaving WMAK...went to NYC with RKO managing KISS 98.7...made a ton-o-cash in a settlement with RKO...went back
to Chicago and had became an owner. I tried to contact him a few times...nothing.

nearly climbed over the desk screaming when he found out how much $$ was involved: cooled down in about 5 seconds. When I offered
proof of the discrepancies (I kept originals)...he just looked at me and said "if you say that's how much...I believe you".
I got every penny that was owed. Never happen in today's climate...

Oh yes! And I am sure you remember George never used the phone PA system. You could be in the back production room at 810 Division and hear George calling someone to his office clear across the building, even through the sound proof walls. That instance you describe was a particular loud revelation as it was VERY expensive. The more they looked into it, the indiscretions got exponentially worse.

Chris, weren’t you there the night George walked in and read the infamous bathroom memo from the current GM, and went ballistic? I would have loved to have heard that one for sure. Now that you mention it, I think I remember the magnificent Roshon “S” bomb as it was a "come to the manager’s office" event. I wish I had one of those McKay-Dymek receivers today. If you remember, I left in mid 1979 and returned in October after the manager at the time was jettisoned. In fact, returned to work the same day that Bill Berlin came back to work after is vehicular disagreement with a school bus, he was out for a long time.

I'll make a quick entry..and leave.
I had returned for a few months to WHIN Gallatin in 1975 and was covering news part time. Went to Portland to cover a 'wreck' between a car and a school bus with the injured victims going to the Portland hospital. I got there before the ambulance, and all of a sudden there's a lot of action as they roll in this streatcher with a guy covered in blood and moaning...followed by a lady and a number of kids. I look down as he rolls by, he looks up, stops moaning, grins and says, "how you doing Buddy?" It was Bill..... Think I had moved back to Houston before he got out of the hospital and returned to work.

We now take you back to your regular programming, now in progress.
 
Not just yet, fellas! Who is this "George" you keep referring to? It isn't George McClintock, is it? From what I understand, he didn't come here (from Memphis) until sometime in the mid '80s, to manage WNQM. However, from the temper outbursts described here, it could certainly be him! ;D

NOW we can return you to regular programming! 8)
