New York Country??

103.5 HD-2 Country plays a decent variety, however, it's a joke because all they do is replay the same jingle from 4 months ago, stating that "country is back in New York!" A smart move would be for Clear Channel to put a full signal, personality driven country station on "HD-1" terrestrial FM. The listenership is there, it's just no one knows much about HD-2 and the receivers are too expensive right now! In a nutshell....the HD-2 "jukebox" just isn't cutting it. There's room to drop at least one of the "gun-toting" "gangsta" stations and put some decency back on the radio. :)

There are many more viable formats than country music on full powered city signals in New York. This topic has been discussed to death but the bottom line is that local advertisers are biast towards the format and for probably good reason.Suburban NJ listeners could support a country music station which is exactly where a country station should be programmed but if it isn't happening there you can forget about one in the city proper. Also where do get your stats that say the listership is there in NYC?Just curious.

obviously listenership is not there... its been done numerous times and they've been for the most part a ratings bomb and a billing nightmare. around the city in jersey, hudson valley there are country stations for the burbs, but look at the city's demos... not exactly those that scream we want country.

Wrong, my friend. I worked as an engineer back when we made WKHK-FM a country station and it was on everywhere. Especially in New York City, Manhattan, everybody had it on. Made New York put its boots on.

You know it. Like has been stated before, Country probably will never be #1, but the format has proven that it makes money. A well programmed station with local flavor would certainly fly better than a few of the disasters we have now. NYC can support at least ONE station, and if not NYC proper....a northern NJ signal such as 1160 AM could. I know I am biased because I personally enjoy the format and I've had friends in the business, but I believe that advertisers are missing the obvious.

I've heard that K98.5 sounds good and is still jockless. However, the signal is still out of range of Northern New Jersey, where the format is lacking.

A country station based in New York may not get the best numbers in the #1 market itself, but would garner great numbers in the suburban markets in Northern New Jersey, Westchester County, Long Island and southwestern Connecticut. In those markets, country fans are trying to listen through static to WXTU/Philly, WWYZ/Hartford and the country station in Poughkeepsie (can't remember its calls). While a NY-based country station may struggle to reach the top 10 in New York, it would definitely be a top 5 finisher in the immediate suburbs.

I don't think that Clear Channel is the company to look to for a flip to country, as their stations are all doing at least reasonably well. I think it's CBS that needs to dump one of its 3 trainwreck stations and flip. Either that, or something happens with 94.7 or 99.5.

I beg to differ. I remember it well. WKHK also did not last. While country radio can have a certain amount of success in this hip, hop crazed city, most advertisers are biast.
NYC. is an eclectic mecca, traditionally diverse in culture, ethnicities and mentallity having more in common with cities in Europe than typical American cities.
While country would pull in some numbers, to program an fm country station would be about as successful and profitable as programming one in Paris.

New York sadly it won't work country. They should stop putting spanish or hip hop or jack on these stations & flip one of them.
I think these stations should flip to Country:
102.7
92.3
103.5
i think 102.7 is a good candidate 102.7 WNEW-New Yorks NEW Country!
92.3-WFNY-Y 92.3 New York's Country Station

Ha ha, blow up ktu for country, have you seen what ktu bills? If country got a 5 share 12+ they wouldn't bill that.

BTW, country is now gone from LA.

it's quite likely the only place oldies, country or standards will ever be heard in NYC is on HD2, HD3 and on satellite and internet. (then in a few years the next format to go to those channels will be classic rock/classic hits.)

AXQ is still top 5 english speaking 25-54, I think they will be around for a while.

Oldies can work in NYC, cbs just needed to update their sound.

Standards could work on AM, but the problem is that its listeners always forget to write it down in their diaries.

the big radio companies are too lazy to program, sell, promote these formats in NYC. (oldies, country, standards)

also--- many corporate suits are under age 40---- and do not like country, oldies or standards. Thus--- we have the current crap formats on the air.

I understand not having country on a full market signal here, although 99.1 98.3 or 105.5 in Jersey are very stupid for not switching to country. However, I do think that an oldies station that plays oldies from '65 to '85 should be on a full market signal. Done right it could be a player 25-54.
