New York Does Not Have An Oldies Station. Period.

Those RRRRs said:
I threw that out there like that on purpose.

The reason is because people are talking about "Hit The Road Jack" and thinking that The Doo Wop Shop is coming back. When I think of the glory days of CBS-FM, that's what I think of.

And those days are over, even if they do play some 60's. My post was for the benefit of those people. They are expecting "The First Generation" of Rock N Roll. This ain't it.

You want to live in the 1950's? Please...buy a CD player.

I have a CD Player. And I'm the arrogant one? It's obvious who the arrogant, condescending one is here, and without mentioning any names, his initials are Kevin Foder.

Sorry if I have to be the pot calling the kettle black.

Jack Hammered

It will take CBS-FM as currently formatted one book to exceed Jack's best numbers ever - in both ratings and revenue.

If you want to listen to Jack, there are 50 homogenized versions available on the Internet. Either that, or set your car radio to "scan". The resulting music format will make about as much sense as Jack.

There must be something in the New York water to make people think that this is a great oldies station because no one in Philly raves about WOGL like many people here are raving about this station. In Philly, it's called listening by default. (Because there's nothing else to listen to)

Wrong again. When I visit Philly every few weekends to see family, it's on everywhere OGL and people are humming along or saying, what a great song! You really need to get a clue dude.

Seems to have a cult like following so these folks could be served crap on a platter where they would eat and exclaim how great it is.

Also what genius thought it would be a great idea to add politician sound bites for this event. With congressional approval ratings at an all time low why would you want to associate your station with these people.

Woggle is not on everywhere. That's crap. You need the clue, not me. You visit family members, and your older relatives are listening. So what? I live here and go a lot of places. It's not playing everywhere. And no one on the Philly board raves about Woggle. NO ONE. Don't tell me I need to get a clue when I live here and you don't.

After you've heard "People Got To Be Free" 10,000 times, trust me, no one is saying "Wow! What a great song."

As far as CBS being a great oldies station is concerned, I could fry a rat and call it Prime Rib, but I'd rather have the real thing.

Multiply that by 10 for "Blue Moon" by the Marcels, or even "Hound Dog" by Elvis

Show me ONE station that fits your definition of an "oldies station" that's in the top 10 in a major market and you might be able to afford Prime Rib instead of fried rat.

An "Oldies" station, however you want to call it is supposed to play familiar music that is easily recognizable.

That's what brings people to the radio station.

You will not attract an audience by playing B-sides, non-hits, or lunar album cuts. This has been proven over and over and over again. The streets of the broadcasting industry are littered with defunct stations that thought to be "different" they needed to play every song from the rock and roll era.

And...gee...what was that I just heard on 101.1? "Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran. Last time I checked, that was from (gasp!) 1958!!!!!!!!!

Everyone says this was supposed to be a Classic Hits station. Not playing Eddie Cochran, it isn't.

Folks, I know I've said some sarcastic and pointed things on this board. And I did it intentionally.

Because I knew when all this began some of you would come out raging about how this is "crap" because it's not 50's music. Guess what? The 50's are in the format. Not as heavily as some of you would like. But, at least some of them are there.

Sounds like a newer version of an "oldies" station to me.

You (Those RRRR's) would not be happy no matter what they put on. You are the type of person that looks out on a day like today and notices the one cloud in the sky and says it's a bad day.

Sure, older people are listening to OGL, but these people have $$$ to spend! The boomers have money and it's really a wonder why advertisers dont want to reach them.
=
Of course no one on the boards raves about Woggle...they arent trying to reach us, they go for the general audience who tunes in for the car ride to work and the car ride home...thus the tight playlist. And trust me, it was on in two businesses that I went to while I was there a few weekends ago...a floral shop and a patio shop. Given that I went into 4 places that day, that's not a bad sample.
=
OGL aint changing...they had that great book with the people meters and I expect the same to happen here once CBS gets going and the meters come this October.

Unbelievable. Is your medication the legal or illegal kind? Not that it matters. I never suggested that that the kind of oldies station that I like is in any Top 10 in any major market. In fact, if you read what I wrote earlier you'll see that I wrote "whether or not it (it being my favorite kind of oldies station) is a radio reality in today's market."

WOGL IS a great oldies station and it is very popular! Like most things, Philly folks don't necessarily appreciate what they have - it's just there. The station is getting the ratings and I do hear it in a lot of places. It just depends where you hang out.

By the way, the comments about WCBS-FM sounding dull or crappy are way off base. Bill Lee is on there bringing more personality to the radio than all the DJs of markets 101-250 put together!

And, the music is great! I am not sure what you guys expect to hear on day 1, 'Nathan Jones' by the Supremes? The B-side to 'Susan' by the Buckinghams (whatever it was called)? Come on - get real!

I listened to CBS-FM's stream from the start and have been spot checking it when I get a chance. As soon as I heard two 80's songs in the first 45 minutes, I knew the trip wire would go off in some people's minds and it wouldn't be long before this thread started.

True enough.

The re-born CBS-FM 101 is going to be a success, in spite of all the bickering that goes on here among the magpies (of which I am one,) because there will be a significant number of people in the target who will LISTEN to it and enjoy the music along with their favorite live, New York radio personalities. The ratings will bear this out.

Already, CBS-FM is a mile ahead of Jack... on its very first day. Would you at least give the radio station a chance to breathe? Oy, such kvetching!

Unless, of course... you want Jack back. Nah. Didn't think so.

Oh, you're a HOBBYIST. Now I get it. Radio reality doesn't figure into your scenario.

Thanks for pointing that out. It will make it easier to ignore your posts in the future.

too bad i cant pick up 101.1 where i live, 101.1 in philly overpowers it :(

All I know is that CBS FM belongs on the air in NYC. And that today, this one day its the most listened to station in the country on air and online.

The problem is it is too recognizable. Familiarity breeds contempt. ;D

A disgruntled hobbyist who wouldn't be happy no matter what they put on. Your posts are more incredible by the minute. No, I like Sirius Gold. I would like it if CBS sounded like that. Not that I expect it to because of the fact that that sound IS NOT THE REALITY OF TODAY'S RADIO.

That is the reality.

And SirRox (with his "I'll ignore your from now on") reminds me of an arrogant liberal from hell who is open to everything and anything unless of course it is something with which he disagrees.
