New York Does Not Have An Oldies Station. Period.

I don't want to electrify this thread the way I've electrified others, but just to state the fact that some of the really early stuff gained life in the 80s--eg. "Do You Love Me" from 1962, which might also qualify as a 1987 hit thanks to "Dirty Dancing".

Still, because I can't resist, just another benign reminder: generally speaking, the 80s-conditioned among us haven't necessarily been as "fixed" in their formative identification with a uniform pop/hit/Top40/CHR radioverse the way their elders/elder siblings tended to be. They've been perked by other influences and resources: MTV, et al--even by the fact that "rock history" existed and was, well, sorta cool. Their tastes aren't necessarily so obtusely "of their era", much less "of their contemporary hit radio era" (or even "their domestic pop radio market", re some of this talk about stuff that wasn't a hit on NY hit radio at the time).

It's like some of you are assuming an 80s listenership that is *extraordinarily* formed by their hit-radio past, to the point where certain popular songs that weren't pop radio hits at the time *still* leave them as uneasy as they leave programming purists uneasy. A listenership that borders upon radio geekery in its own right--but presumably, not so much or so pestily that you'd be shushing them away to satellite.

So, I'm not objecting to the way things have come w/WCBS so far; I'm just cautioning a lot of you re your audience/demo/market assumptions. Sometimes, it seems like there's a programming mentality out there that still thinks there's an audience that doesn't know "Whole Lotta Love" has an o*g*sm break...

Grammar Moses. LOL. Now that's funny! See? I give credit where credit is due.

To be honest, I don't have a gripe with the station, with you, or with anyone else.

I don't consider Springsteen and Billy Joel oldies music. That's just me. People have been excited about the return of CBS-FM, and I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed if the station plays too much 70's and 80's because that music has been overplayed for a long time and doesn't seem to fit the Classic CBS-FM library.

That said, they are playing some 60's, and I was surprised to hear Eddie Cochran. Yes it's still too early to tell, but I think that many people who listened ten years ago are going to tune out.

That was my point.

Largely, the people who will listen to CBS-FM will not be the over 55 crowd. They will center between age 35 and 54, which is where you need to be, financially speaking.

The 50's music they will play is a good faith attempt to play some of the "timeless" classics that you can't play too often, or else be branded an "old folks station". They will hang on to some 55 plus-ers, but not the majority. (And, frankly, I don't think they're expecting to hang on to the people who listened ten years ago) They will, likely, take audience from the upper end of Lite, because this format is more "upbeat", than light rock.

Some of the negative posts about CBS-FM are stunning... makes me think you could hand some people a million dollars and they'd bitch because it wasn't gift-wrapped.

Guys, get off the age kick. You can be 18 or 80 and get into Chuck Berry as well as the Cranberries.
There are people ages 18-30 that like the 50's. Go watch a commercial on TV or watch a movie and what do you hear 50's and 60's ttracks.. So don't be so positive only old farts like Oldies ( Real Oldies).
You want to listen to a genuine Real Oldies Station. go to wdjo.com and check out the format that Dan Allen of Clear channel put together when he worked at 1530 WSAI....and He Ain't Old...by a long shot, but he knows the music.New Yorkers are no different, and CBS was the Oldies Station

WCBS has a hooked listener in market #5! I've been listening for almost an hour and I am 'Lovin' Every Minute Of It"!

Well, I can't believe the Orbison comment from RRRRRRRR. Trivial twit ain't programming nothin' in his life, now he/she/it?

And can't anyone in NYC say BRAVO to CBS for giving a station back to the PEOPLE and the trashed air staff
that now gets a paycheck instead of being so self-centered that this station doesn't play only what 15 Million
listeners EACH wanna listen to...exactly. The Corporate pinheads that are ALWAYS screwing up radio in
this country have, this time, lost a big chunk of their a$$e$. Celebrate for a change. Geez. Bask in the
glory that "WE" won....

I saw the list of what CBS-FM is playing and even though I like my oldies well aged it doesn't look bad to me.

Having said that it seems like they could have some specialty shows with the pre-'64 stuff.

Overall, it's better than I expected!

CBS-FM, playing oldies, is a massive improvement over the Jack format but, if you are looking for CBS-FM to be a true oldies station and play all the core 1955-1971 music and nothing else, those days are over. CBS-FM's ratings and billings will go way up in comparison to Jack but, it is more of a matter of desperation for the audience who would rather have 10% of a loaf musically than no oldies station at all. One other thing, this station is being run as cheaply as possible with the djs they have who are all probably working for the AFTRA scale minimum but, for jocks like Bob Shannon, it is better than being out of work for two years. You will never hear anyone like Dan Ingram on this station with what they are paying. That's why Ingram left in the first place.
